Hockey monopoly

NEW YORK — Only Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin prevented the Montreal Canadiens from an All-Star sweep.

The NHL announced the starting lineups Saturday for the midseason classic, and the host Canadiens filled four of the six slots for the Eastern Conference.

Crosby and Malkin, teammates and linemates with the defending East champion Pittsburgh Penguins, both broke the record for the most votes and claimed two forward positions.

They will be joined up front by Montreal’s Alex Kovalev.

Jaromir Jagr, a former Penguins star, had held the record for votes, but his mark was broken by 11 players — including all six East starters — in this year’s fan balloting conducted online and via text messaging.

Crosby, elected as a starter for the third time, garnered 1,713,021 votes — shattering Jagr’s 2000 total of 1,020,736. Malkin was second with more than 1.5 million votes.

Mayorov called up

COLUMBUS — The Columbus Blue Jackets added forward Maksim Mayorov to the roster from their AHL affiliate in Syracuse on Saturday.

Mayorov has seven goals and nine assists for 16 points with 20 penalty minutes in 33 games with the Syracuse Crunch in his first professional season. He is tied for third on the club in goals, points and power-play goals.

The 19-year-old Mayorov was the 94th pick overall in the 2007 draft. He also played with Ak Bars Kazan of the Russian Elite League.

SAN ANTONIO — Tajh Boyd threw three touchdown passes, including a pair to Miami-bound Bryce Brown, and the East high school stars beat the West 30-17 in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Saturday.

Cardinal Mooney High senior lineman John Simon played for the East team.

Boyd — who starred at Phoebus High School in Hampton, Va., and hasn’t committed to a college — gave his team a 20-10 lead in the third quarter on a 60-yard touchdown to Brown.

Brown, from Wichita, Kan., scored again when Boyd found him behind the West defense for a 41-yard TD that gave the East a 30-10 lead with 6:16 remaining.

It didn’t take Boyd long to get going after he entered the game midway through the second quarter. On his first series, he completed a 34-yard pass on third-and-13 to Michigan-bound Jeremy Gallon. Two plays later, he found Corey Brown in the end zone for a 14-3 East lead with 1:55 left in the first half.

Murray beats Nadal

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — In a strong statement leading to the Australian Open, Andy Murray has beaten Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on consecutive days.

The Scotsman defeated the top-ranked Nadal 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 Saturday to capture the Capitala World Tennis Championship exhibition and $250,000 winner-take-all prize. A day earlier in the semifinals, he topped the No. 2-ranked Federer 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6).

The tournament, not part of the ATP Tour, included six of the world’s top 10 players.

Nishioka keeps title

YOKOHAMA, Japan — Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan beat Genaro Garcia of Mexico on a technical knockout in the 12th round Saturday to retain his WBC super bantamweight interim champion title.

It was Nishioka’s first successful defense of the belt he won against Napapol Kiatisakchokchai of Thailand last September.

With his sharp left hand, Nishioka was a comfortable winner over the tenacious 31-year-old Mexican, who withstood a barrage of punches in the final round.

“I really wanted to beat him,” Nishioka said. “My boxing still needs a lot of improvement, but I am glad that I beat him in the end.”

LONDON — Nottingham Forest won 3-0 at high-spending Manchester City for the biggest upset in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday. In another surprise, Southend played to a 1-1 draw at Chelsea, scoring the tying goal during injury time.

Premier League leader Liverpool won 2-0 at Preston, with Albert Riera scoring in the first half and captain Steven Gerrard setting up the second goal by substitute Fernando Torres in injury time. Gerrard has been charged with assault in a nightclub brawl and is to appear in court Jan. 23.

Nathan Tyson and Rob Earnshaw had first-half goals for Forest, which plays in the League Championship.

Joe Garner scored in the 75th minute to complete an embarrassing result for Manchester City, which is also struggling in the Premier League.
