Wounded man found at site of accident

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngs-town police continue their investigation into a traffic accident in which they discovered an unconscious man at the scene.

A Youngstown police officer was called to the site of a traffic accident Thursday on Ivanhoe Avenue on the city’s South Side, where a man was discovered shot and lying beside a sport-utility vehicle that crashed into a front porch.

Shortly after 7 a.m., the officer found 29-year-old Donell Rowe, of Avondale Avenue, unresponsive on the ground next to the passenger door of a Ford Explorer. Rowe appeared to be shot in his left side but was alive and was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Officers also reported that footprints were found leaving the vehicle’s driver-side door, and a K-9 unit was called out to investigate.

According to a theft report, the owner of the vehicle contacted authorities around 3:30 a.m. Thursday and said Rowe took the Explorer without permission. Roe’s condition was not released by the hospital.

Girl shot in head

FREDONIA, Pa. (AP) — State police say they’ll meet with a Mercer County district attorney today to determine whether charges should be filed in the shooting of a 10-year-old county girl by a 15-year-old relative.

Police aren’t identifying the victim or the boy who shot her in the head Wednesday evening on Rutledge Road in Delaware Township.

The girl was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital, Pittsburgh, where she was in critical condition at press time Thursday.

Police say the shooting occurred at a residence about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday while the victim and the teenage boy were alone in the home. Police believe the shooting was accidental but say charges could still be filed after today’s meeting. Police say a handgun was used but have not said how the 15-year-old came to possess it.
