Mill Creek show features photos from late-19th, early-20th centuries
staff report
YOUNGSTOWN — An exhibition of photographs titled “Ernest Vickers’ Youngstown Retrospective” opens next Friday at the Weller Gallery at Fellows Riverside Gardens. The exhibition, which runs through Feb. 22, showcases the serenity and beauty of Mill Creek Park.
Vickers was an amateur photographer who was born around 1871. His photographs span the late-19th and early-20th centuries, with subjects ranging from family and friends to dramatic outdoor scenes to whimsical vignettes, with compositions both carefree and carefully arranged.
Vickers was also a botanist and served as Mill Creek Park’s naturalist beginning in 1929. He took advantage of nature walks to capture breathtaking images of well-known park landmarks along with more obscure scenes of nature.
Fellows Riverside Gardens, operated by Mill Creek MetroParks, is a botanical display garden open daily, free of charge, from dawn to dark. The Davis Education and Visitor Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. For more information call (330) 740-7116.
