Dual success: Two local wrestling teams remained undefeated in dual matches with victories over the Christmas weekend. West Branch improved to 8-0 in dual matches by beating Hubbard and Salem. Meanwhile, Girard is now 7-0 in duals after a win over Brookfield last week.
Fitch strong at Brecksville: The Fitch wrestling squad finished 15th at the prominent Brecksville Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28-29. The Falcons scored 98 points in the event, which was won by Wadsworth (188). Fitch finished with four placers, including Louis Greco (third, 145 pounds), Jake Peterson (fourth, 140), Shawn Ague (seventh, 103) and Chris Miller (seventh, 215).
Boardman places four at Kenston: Four Spartans earned spots on the podium at the Kenston Invitational Tournament over the holiday weekend. Senior Jerry Pasquale won the 119-pound title. Weston Rajakovich (160) took third, Chris Lorimer (125) finished fourth and Ricky Zupko (130) was fifth.
Brenner excels at Medina: Canfield senior Aron Brenner was the lone member of his team to place at this week’s Medina Invitational Tournament. Brenner finished 5-1in he two-day tournament and took third place at 152 pounds.
Beaver Local second at Southview: The Beavers racked up 212.5 points to finish second to host Lorain Southview. Beaver Local came away with three individual champions, including returning state placers Arizona Miller (112 pounds) and Dylan Ice (140). Jake Henderson won his Southview weight class at 189 pounds.
Perry ends St. Edwards’ reign: Massillon Perry won the team title at the Medina tournament, ending powerful St. Edwards’ run of four straight MIT wins. The Eagles have won 12 straight Division I state titles (23 overall), but many expect Perry to end that streak this season at the state tournament in March.
