Trustees reorganize
NORTH LIMA — Beaver Township trustees named officers and set the day and time of their 2009 public meetings.
The trustees, at the township’s annual reorganization session Tuesday, agreed to continue having their public meetings at 6 p.m. the second Monday of every month, unless otherwise announced, at the township administration office.
Ron Kappler was named trustee chairman, and Larry Wehr was voted vice chairman. Full-time department heads were given 3-percent, across-the-board raises, annually.
The raise brought fire Chief Russ Osborne’s salary to $54,075 and police Chief Carl Frost’s pay to $66,508 annually. Road Supervisor John Stear’s new wage was set at $22.96 an hour.
Annexation hearing
CANFIELD — Mahoning County commissioners will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday for a public hearing about a petition filed to annex land in the township to the city. The hearing will be at the Canfield Township Hall on South Broad Street.
The petition filed Oct. 24 is to annex 42 township acres to the city. Township Trustee Randy Brashen said the board of trustees is asking residents who have an opinion on the petition to attend.
“We wish neighbors who have a pro or con will show up so the commissioners can hear in person how [residents] feel,” he said.
‘Three Kings Day’ party
YOUNGSTOWN — Celebrate the Hispanic “Three Kings Day” tradition from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Saborico Corner Market and Cafe, 1361 Shehy St. Toys will be handed out to children up to age 12. There will be a special appearance by the Three Kings at 4 p.m., when they will hand out the gifts.
There will be fun and music for all and food for sale. The event is sponsored by Saborico, OCCHA, Rumba the Show, Pito’s Auto, Atty. Miram Ocasio, LAMA, Felipe Gonzalez (Contigo los Sabados 90.7 FM), Sons of Borinquen, and other neighborhood donors.
Man robbed of wallet
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A city man was robbed of his wallet while waiting for friends outside a bar, police said.
Police said an officer met the victim at the parking lot of Cascade Park on East Washington Street, where he told them a woman had approached his car and asked him for a ride.
He told her no, but then a man came from an alley behind the bar and took his wallet at gunpoint, he told police.
Police describe the woman as in her early 20s, 5 feet 4 inches and 100 pounds. The man was about 6 feet 3 inches and 170 pounds.
The victim said his wallet had $3 in cash and a debit card.
Diabetes cooking school
CORTLAND — A cooking school for people with diabetes and their families will be from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Jan. 7, 14 and 21 at the Trumbull County Agriculture and Family Education Center, 520 West Main Street.
The program provides information on healthful foods, healthful versions of familiar foods, new cooking techniques and basic information on diabetes and nutrition.
According to Ohio State University Extension Trumbull County, one of 10 people in Trumbull County has diabetes, with Ohio having the fourth-highest death rate in the United States due to complications from diabetes. Attendance is limited to 30 people. Those participating should register by Dec. 30. Registration costs $20 per person. For more information, call (330) 638-6783.
Computer course offered
YOUNGSTOWN — Warrior’s Inc. is offering a six-week beginners community computer training course starting Jan. 20 at the Hope Building, 2733 Market St. The classes will be every Tuesday night from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m. Participants will learn how to navigate through the program Microsoft Word and learn other basic computer skills. Woman gets probation
MERCER, Pa. — A Mercer County Common Pleas Court judge has placed Lisa Boyle, 34, of Hasenflu Drive, Hermitage, on one year’s probation and ordered her to make restitution for resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.
While being arrested July 27, she pulled away from a Sharon police officer, who suffered injuries to his fingers.
