Six alive for titles in D-1
MASSILLON — Boardman, Austintown Fitch and Canfield will each have two wrestlers competing in championship semifinals today at the Division I district championships.
Several other wrestlers remain alive for state tournament berths at the tournament, hosted by Perry High School.
At 119 pounds, Jerry Pasquale of Boardman and Robby Reed of Canfield are both in the semifinals after each won two matches on Friday night.
Pasquale, a junior, opened with a 13-0 major decision of Matt Lioi of Canton GlenOak. He followed up that win with an 11-9 decision over Dan McNulty of Mayfield.
That sets up a semifinal match today against David Bolger of Strongsville.
Reed pinned Caleb Boron of Massillon Jackson in 3 minutes, 9 seconds, and decisioned Matt Hammer of Medina 4-0, advancing to face Alex Gray of Wadsworth in today;s other 119 semifinal.
Also in the semifinals for Boardman is freshman John Dillon at 103. Dillon decisioned Anthony Zingale of Mayfield, 3-0, in the first round, then decisioned Alfredo Gray of Wadsworth, 5-2. He’ll face Brian Hauser of Brush, a senior, in the semifinals.
Also advancing in the championship bracket for Canfield was senior Aron Brenner at 152. Brenner pinned Mohammed Ismail of Maple Heights in 1:45, then decisioned Deante Russ of Nordonia, 8-3. He’ll next face Chet Bissell, a junior from Twinsburg.
In today’s semifinals for Fitch are junior Shawn Ague (119) and senior Louis Greco (145).
Ague defeated Al Ewing of Medina, 13-1, and pinned Nate Black of Green in 2:46 to advance.
Next up for Ague is a freshman, Kagan Squire of Wadsworth, in the semifinals.
Greco decision Shane Green of Lodi Cloverleaf 5-0 and Zack Cline of Uniontown Lake, 3-2, and will face Nate Ball of Wadsworth in a semifinal.
The tournament is scheduled to resume today at 11 a.m. with consolation matches and the championship semifinals, and the finals are slated to begin at 7 p.m.
In the Division III district tournament at Maple Heights, no results were reported.
Jackson-Milton had seven wrestlers in the tournament who qualified out of the sectional meet at Rootstown High School.
Girard, Warren JFK, South Range and Brookfield also had wrestlers competing in the tournament. The finals were scheduled for today.
