Swimmer Arnold breaks record
BROWN DEER, Wis. – Senior Olivia Arnold broke her school record in the 1,000 yard freestyle to finish fifth in the event during the first night of the Horizon League Championships at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center.
Arnold swam the 1,000 in a record-breaking time of 10:21.05 to place fifth in an extremely fast field. Arnold lowered her school-record time by two seconds. She placed eighth at the 2008 HL Championships with a time that was 12 seconds slower.
Milwaukee’s Danielle Wenger won the event with a meet and league record time of 10:06.65. The top three placers all finished under the previous conference meet record time, which was set in 2005.
Also in the event, Natasha Bray placed 14th with a time of 10:38.36. Freshman Katie Wolf set a personal best with a swim of 11:10.38 while Hilary Barrett had a time of 11:13.97.
YSU opened the competition with a near school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The tandem of Nishani Cicilson, Megan Rupe, Kirstin Walker and Alana Kane has a time of 1:37.43 to place seventh.

Thunder gets former Buckeye Cheatwood
BOARDMAN — Former Ohio State football player Tim Cheatwood has been assigned to the Mahoning Valley Thunder for the 2009 season.
Cheatwood (6-foot-4, 260 pounds) is a native of Cleveland. He has also played professionally in the Canadian Football League, spending six seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Edmonton Eskimos.
Soccer referee clinic Saturday
SALEM — A clinic for soccer referee candidates will be Saturday at the Salem Memorial Building, 785 East State St., Salem.
The clinic, designated for a USSF grade 9 novice license, will be in session from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Bethany freshman Beckwirth does well
BETHANY, W.Va. — Bethany freshman Lance Beckwith (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God Christian Academy) earned a trio of awards for his play last week, including the PAC and ECAC South Region Player of the Week and a spot on the national website D3Hoops.com’s National Team of the Week.
The 6-0 guard was spectacular in two wins last week for the Bison (16-10), which clinched the #2 seed in the PAC Tournament. He averaged 30.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in the victories. He scored 27 points on 10-for-18 shooting in an 82-77 win over Westminster. Then Beckwith equaled his career-high of 34 points in a 74-65 win at Washington & Jefferson.
Swimming’s Klamut gets appointment
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College men’s and women’s swimming head coach Rob Klamut was selected to join the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Committee. Klamut will serve a three-and-a-half year term as a committee member.
Klamut is completing his 24th season as head coach at Westminster.
Brandenburg earns second honor
BETHANY, W.Va. – For the second time this year, Bethany senior Renee Brandenburg (Avella, Pa.) has been chosen by the national website D3Hoops.com for its national Team of the Week, which selects five nominated players from across all of Division III.
The 6-1 center averaged 17 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in two games last week for the Bison.

Crowder signs deal with Dolphins
MIAMI — Linebacker Channing Crowder has signed a multiyear contract to remain with the Miami Dolphins, a surprising move after negotiations appeared at a stalemate only a few days ago.
The deal was announced Wednesday night.
A former Florida Gators star, Crowder has been a starter since his rookie season in 2005. He moved to middle linebacker last year when Zach Thomas departed and had a career-high 114 tackles.
Air Fair wins at Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. — Air Fair defeated Play Nine by 1 3/4 lengths to win Wednesday’s $49,600 Palm Springs Purse for 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita.
