Guitar gaming tourney

NILES — Art Outreach Gallery in Eastwood Mall will host a Guitar Gaming Tournament, featuring competition in Guitar Hero World Tour, on Saturday.

The tournament will start at noon in the Mall Concourse in front of Sears. Sign-in begins at 11 a.m. The competition will run from noon to 5:30 p.m.

The tournament is free and open to youths age 13 to 18. Registration forms are available at the gallery and the GameStop store, also in the mall. Signed parent/guardian consent is required for all players.

Up to 64 guitar gamers will compete in player vs. player matches. Entries will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Various mall stores have donated tournament prizes.

Arraigned in homicide

YOUNGS- TOWN — Ryan McGee of Superior Street was arraigned Wednesday in municipal court on charges of murder and felonious assault, and his bond was set at $2 million.

McGee is accused in the Saturday night death of Melkanoe L. Bowman, 24, of Homewood Avenue, who was shot in the head at 946 Delaware Ave. on the North Side. Across the street, at 945 Delaware, a bullet hit a 6-year-old boy in his left foot as he slept. Police have said the motive was a feud. McGee will be back in court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.

A second suspect, Keilan A. Clinkscale, 20, of Coronado Avenue was arrested Wednesday on a murder charge and was expected to be arraigned today in municipal court.

Wells to greet OSU fans

NILES — Former Ohio State University running back Chris “Beanie” Wells of Akron will greet fans from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Eastwood Mall concourse between center court and Sears, which is where the WFMJ bureau is. The event is free to the public.

OSU merchandise, autographs and photographs will be available for purchase.

Wellness center to open

NILES — The Mayor Ralph A. Infante Wellness Center on Sharkey Drive will have its grand opening, ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. Friday.

The $4.1 million facility contains a full-sized indoor soccer field, running track and exercise equipment. The grand opening had been scheduled for last November but was delayed due to construction problems. City officials said the project did not go over budget.

Cat dies in house fire

YOUNGSTOWN — The occupant at 1632 Bancroft Ave. on the South Side told firefighters he fell asleep with a pot of grease on the stove and discovered the kitchen on fire when awakened by his cat.

Firefighters said the Tuesday afternoon fire was confined to the kitchen but the house had smoke damage throughout. The cat perished, reports show. The Red Cross was called to assist the family. Damage was estimated at $10,000 to the house and contents.

YOUNGSTOWN — Know Your Neighbor Block Watch meeting is at 6 p.m. today at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane.

Blood-pressure tests

WARREN — In celebration of Heart Month, Panera Bread is partnering with the American Heart Association to provide free blood-pressure screenings for their customers Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Canfield; Hermitage, Pa.; and Warren caf locations.

To thank customers for supporting the AHA, all customers who participate in the screenings will receive a discount on their purchase at those locations. Additionally, the heart association will provide informative literature to each customer on how to reduce the risk of heart disease in their own lives and how to become more involved with the fight against heart disease.
