Tigers roar to record finish


Canfield defeated Fitch while Mooney fell to Alliance in non-league games.

NEWTON FALLS — Freshman Cody Dillon set a school record with eight 3-pointers Tuesday as the Newton Falls High boys basketball tied a school record for wins with an 89-61 victory over Warren JFK.

Dillon netted one more than the previous mark and finished with 24 points.

Brian Sole added 17 points for the Tigers (18-2), who also broke the school record for 3-pointers in a game with 17 — four more than the old record. Todd Medallis, who added 13 points, has already broken the single-season assist record. He has more than 150. Marcus Fowler had 19 points.

Nick Brown scored 27 points and Stephen Procopio added 11 for JFK (12-7), which fell behind 24-13 after one quarter.

Canfield 52, Fitch 40

AUSTINTOWN — Mike Podolsky, Justen Vrabel and Casey Carroll each scored nine points to lead Canfield (14-5).

The Cardinals outscored Fitch 18-7 in the third quarter to take control.

John Williams had 19 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Fitch (3-17).

Alliance 56, Mooney 49

YOUNGSTOWN — John Stoops had 13 points and nine rebounds for Mooney (8-11).

The Cardinals couldn’t overcome a slow start as they fell behind 14-5 after one quarter.

Donald D’Alesio added eight points and five assists.

Marquez McClendon made four 3-pointers and finished with 22 points for the Aviators (16-4).

Niles 74, Chaney 59

NILES — Ryan Frantz scored 18 points to lead five Red Dragons in double figures.

Cory Floyd had 12 points for Niles (6-14), while Saul Vaughn, Nick Young and Joe Moss each added 11 as the Red Dragons took a 23-7 lead after one quarter.

Ken Strong had 14 points and Myke Parker 12 for the Cowboys (4-15).

Campbell 71, Salem 63

SALEM — Campbell had four players in double figures to gain the edge in a closely contested AAC non-tier game.

Claxton Lebron had 17 points, Nate Hodge 15, Jerah’me Wiliams 14 and Dorian Jones 11 for the Red Devils (15-5, 9-1 Blue Tier).

Campbell scored 21 second-quarter points after both teams had 14 points in the first quarter.

The Red Devils managed to stay ahead slightly thereafter.

Chris Brown’s game-high 29 points paced Salem (11-8, 5-3 White Tier).

Lakeview 71, LaBrae 61

CORTLAND — Robert Franks had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists to lead a balanced attack for Lakeview (16-4), which took a 25-10 lead after one quarter.

Justin Clark added 16 points and Joel Davis 10.

Matt Szorady had 15 points and Mike Morris 11 for LaBrae (12-8).

Struthers 91, Champion 80

CHAMPION — Nate Jacubec scored 30 points to lead the Wildcats (8-12, 3-6).

Struthers led just 44-43 at the break but out-scored Champion 24-13 in the third period.

Mike Smith led Champion (8-12, 5-5) with 16 points.

Lowellville 106, Jackson-Milton 59

NORTH JACKSON — Mauro Amendola poured in 26 points to lead a balanced attack and the Rockets took a 27-9 lead after one quarter.

Pat Minnie added 15 points and 10 rebounds for Lowellville (10-10, 7-7 Inter tri-County League Tier Two).

Joe Harris had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Anthony Alfano added 11 points, Mike Basista 10 and Anthony Schiraldi 10 points and eight assists.

Bobby Schnellbach had 22 points for J-M (1-19, 1-13). Jeff Balent added 15 points and five assists and Ben Carlile 14 points.

Southern 71, Western Reserve 65

SALINEVILLE — Senior Nathan Melhorn was fouled with 45 seconds remaining, then hit two free throws to put the game out of reach at 70-65 for Southern.

Jake Boyle had 21 of his 29 points in the first half and the sophomore also had 10 rebounds for the winners (8-11, 7-7 ITCL2).

Andrew Diaz had eight points, eight rebounds and six assists for Southern.

Justin Lude’s 27 points paced Western Reserve, while Eric Kennehan added 14 points for the visiting Blue Devils (11-9, 6-8).

Kennedy Catholic 75, Rocky Grove 59

SHARON, Pa. — Kyle randall scored 22 points as the Eagles (21-2) won the first-round District 10 Class A tournament game at Sharon High. Andra Jones scored 18 points and made 18 rebounds.

Kennedy Catholic’s next game will be Friday.
