Cost-cutting measures

A look at some of the ways Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland is attempting to cut costs in his two-year, $54.4 billion budget proposal:

Allows the Department of Development to recoup the costs of trade missions to foreign countries from businesses that benefit from the trading relationships.

Allows for a moratorium on holiday pay for employees of state agencies, the secretary of state, state auditor, treasurer, and attorney general when a fiscal emergency is declared.

Cuts pay for state employees beginning July 1.

Allows Administrative Services director to impose mandatory furloughs.

Imposes fees for extraction of natural gas and crude oil.

Cuts funding for the Ohio Cultural Facilities Commission by 28 percent in the first year.

Cuts funding for the Ohio Civil Rights Commission by 10 percent in the first year and 6 percent in the second.
