nhl roundup Tuesday’s games

Flyers 4, Capitals 2

WASHINGTON — Scott Hartnell and Jeff Carter scored two of Philadelphia’s three goals in a 3 1/2-minute span of the third period, and the Flyers came back to beat Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals. Ovechkin finally seemed to have figured out the Flyers, assisting on Washington’s first goal and scoring the second for a 2-0 lead. He was held without a point in two previous games this season against Philadelphia, the only Eastern Conference opponent that hadn’t allowed a goal by Ovechkin in 2008-09. But the Flyers cut their deficit to 2-1 during a 5-on-3 midway through the second period, when Claude Giroux scored. And then, suddenly, Capitals goalie Jose Theodore couldn’t stop anything in the third. Philadelphia tied it 9:11 into the final period on Hartnell’s 22nd goal, off assists from Joffrey Lupul and Carter. Then, 1:25 later, Carter’s 25th goal — with assists from Lupul and Hartnell — put Philadelphia ahead for the first time. Arron Asham put the final touch on the rally with his fifth goal, giving Philadelphia its season-high fourth consecutive road victory.

Canadiens 3, Canucks 0

MONTREAL — Jaroslav Halak made 34 saves for his first shutout of the season and Tomas Plekanec had a goal and an assist. Halak won his second successive start and posted his fourth career shutout, his first since March 15. Plekanec scored his 16th goal late in the first period and set up Andrei Markov’s power-play goal in the second. Maxim Lapierre scored into an empty net with 5.8 seconds remaining. Montreal has won two in a row at home after winding up a 1-4-1 road trip that punctuated a stretch of 12 losses in 15 games overall (3-11-1). Roberto Luongo stopped 14 shots for Vancouver, which ended a four-game winning streak.

Ducks 3, Sabres 2

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 34 shots in the win over the injury-depleted Sabres. Todd Marchant, with a short-handed goal, and Mike Brown scored in the second period to break open a game tied at 1. Teemu Selanne also scored for the Ducks, who snapped a five-game winless streak at Buffalo (0-3-2), and completed a two-game season-series sweep over the Sabres.

Bruins 6, Panthers 1

BOSTON — Rookie fourth-line winger Byron Bitz scored his second and third NHL goals in the opener of Boston’s six-game homestand. Michael Ryder, returning from a seven-game absence after surgery to repair facial fractures, had a goal and an assist. Stephane Yelle and Marc Savard both had two assists for the Bruins, who won for only the second time in the last eight games. Boston had just completed a 1-3-1 road trip that included a 2-0 loss at Florida last Saturday.

Thrashers 4, Avalanche 3

ATLANTA — Ilya Kovalchuk got his 10th goal in eight games, and the Thrashers had two short-handed scores to break a four-game home losing streak. The Thrashers won for just the fifth time in their last 21 games at Philips Arena.

Senators 4, Hurricanes 2

OTTAWA — Dany Heatley scored his 30th goal of the season; it’s the fifth time in his seven NHL seasons that he’s reached the 30-goal mark and fourth year in a row. Heatley and Chris Kelly scored goals 46 seconds apart in the first period for Ottawa.
