Ice Wine Festival coming to Grand River Valley

MADISON — The Winegrowers of the Grand River Valley Wine Region will have their sixth annual Ice Wine Festival on March 7 and March 14 at several wineries that are all within a 10-minute drive of one another.

Participating wineries are Debonne Vineyards, Ferrante Winery and Ristorante, Grand River Cellars Winery and Restaurant, Laurello Vineyards and St. Joseph Vineyards. Participants can start at any winery.

Event organizer Cindy Lindberg of Grand River Cellars said there are some new events at the festival this year. “Grand River Cellars will be roasting their famous homemade Ice Wine Marshmallows, and Debonne Vineyards has created a delicious Ice Wine Martini. Both of these extras will cost the patron a little extra but is certainly worth the price,” she said.

“In addition, many of the winemakers will be on hand for people to talk to, and other wines will be available for people to taste.”

Ice wines are from grapes that are left on the vines at the end of the harvest season. Once the grapes reach temperatures below 17 degrees, they are picked and pressed immediately before they have a chance to thaw.

Picking is usually done during the night, and pressing is at the break of day.

The event begins at noon and ends at 5 p.m., and the cost is $5 per person at each winery. For more information, go to wggrv.com.
