February 24, 1959: A small fire at the F.W. Woolworth Co. at 110 W. Federal St., frightens scores of downtown customers and employees during the height of Monday Night shopping. Fans quickly fill the store with smoke, but everyone escapes safely.
The Chi Chi Restaurant, an all-night cheat spot on Belmont Avenue just north of Gypsy Lane, is raided by Trumbull County sheriff’s deputies. The restaurant never closed, catering to an underage crowd and serving liquor in coffee cups and beer in milk shake containers.
The Mahoning County Welfare Department is closing between 150 and 200 relief cases as men return to work in increasing numbers, says I.L. Feuer, Welfare director.
