Softball team swept by George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. — The YSU softball team remained winless in four starts after being swept Sunday by George Mason, 7-2, 9-3.

In the opener, the Penguins collected nine hits but stranded 10 runners.

Freshman Jordan Ingalls went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.

In the nightcap, junior Autumn Grove collected three of YSU’s seven hits and drove in a run.

Also, freshman Kristen Philen doubled and drove in a run and freshman Amanda Palmore delivered an RBI single.

Baseball team falls

ATHENS, Ga. — Jacke Healey and Eric Marzec each had two hits with a pair of RBIs apiece but the YSU baseball team still lost to Georgia Sunday, 12-8.

The Penguins (0-3) scored six runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-5 lead.

The Bulldogs are 3-0.

Third tennis sweep

BOARDMAN — The women’s tennis team beat St. Bonaventure to pick up its third 7-0 win of the season and its fourth win overall.

The Penguins won four singles rounds in straight sets.

YSU also won at No. 1 and 2 doubles.

Men tops IPFW

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The men’s tennis team picked up its second win of the weekend and third straight victory by beating IPFW, 5-2.

The Penguins secured the early doubles point and won four singles matches to improve to an overall record 4-4.

Prep hockey records

CANFIELD — Although the Canfield High ice hockey team was eliminated from the playoffs 11-0 by University School Saturday, the Cardinals had a record-breaking season.

Riley Emery scored a school-record 30 goals and added 21 assists. Joe Geiser set the mark of 28 goals earlier in the season.

The Cardinals (11-15) won the second-most games in the school’s nine-year history and they set a team record with 101 goals.

Mercer racing begins

MERCER, Pa. — Mercer Raceway will begin its 58th season Saturday at 7 p.m.

Diving honor

ALLIANCE — Mount Union College sophomore Mary Vallinger (Poland) was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Diver of the Year for a second straight season.

She set a school record and posted a qualifying mark for the NCAA meet in the 3-meter (438.8) and she won the 1-meter title for the second year in a row.

Matt Carlozzi (Canfield) was all-OAC in three events with second-place finishes in the 500 freestyle (4:44.97), the 800 freestyle relay (7:10.32) and he was third in the 1,650 free (16:54.03).

Bocce four-peat

YOUNGSTOWN — Bob Camardo’s Esquire Barber Shop has won the Arco Club City Bocce League Championship for the fourth straight year and five out of the last eight years.

Esquire defeated Nick DeLisio’s Crown Royal team. Members of the championship team are Mike Provenzale, Lou Canotti, Don DePaul, Tom George, Nick Gentile, Gene Russo and Bob Camardo.

Leipheimer defends

ESCONDIDO, Calif. — Levi Leipheimer has won his third straight Tour of California.

Leipheimer took over the lead in the nine-day race last Monday and never gave it up.

Lance Armstrong, who began a comeback last month, spent this race in support of Leipheimer, his Astana teammate. Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France winner, finished seventh overall.

Roddick wins first

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Andy Roddick won his first title of 2009 and the 27th of his career Sunday, beating Czech Radek Stepanek 7-5, 7-5 in the finals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.

Only Roger Federer (57) and Rafael Nadal (32) have won more titles among active players. Roddick got a bit of revenge for losing to Stepanek in the semifinals in San Jose last week and improved to 5-1 all-time against the man trying to become the first Czech to win in Memphis since Ivan Lendl in 1991.

Gulfstream racing

HALLANDALE, Fla. — Criticism led from the start and won $100,000 Grade 3 The Very One Stakes for fillies and mares at Gulfstream on Sunday.

Criticism led by two lengths at the top of the stretch and beat Dress Rehearsal by 2 1/2 lengths. Backseat Rhythm finished third in the field of 13.

Plastic Ball Championship

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — Jeff Carter built a big lead in the early frames and held off Pete Weber 235-213 to win the PBA Tour’s GEICO Plastic Ball Championship on Sunday.

Carter, whose first tour victory came in his 123rd tournament, had a 56-pin lead by rolling six strikes after a first-frame spare.
