Baseball team blanked

ATHENS, GA. — Three Georgia pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Bulldogs took a 14-0 victory from the Penguins (0-2).

Seven of the Bulldogs’ 14 hits went for extra bases.

Georgia starter Alex McRee, who picked up three wins over top-20 teams during the 2008 regular season and two in the NCAA Tournament, allowed four hits and struck out six in 5.2 innings to earn the victory.

David Leon finished 2-for-3 to lead YSU.

The Penguins got a runner into scoring position in the top of the first when C.J. Morris singled and moved to second on Eric Hymel’s sacrifice bunt.

Impressive debut

FAIRFAX, VA. Freshman Jordan Ingalls went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and a run batted in and pitched four innings but the YSU softball team dropped its season opener to George Mason, 4-3.

Ingalls homered in her first collegiate at-bat to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead in the top half of the third inning.

The Penguins took a 3-0 advantage when freshman Amanda Palmore reached on a field’s choice, freshman Haley Thomas tripled her home and junior Autumn Grove’s had an infield single.

O’Nora to speak

YOUNGSTOWN — Major League Baseball umpire Brian O’Nora will speak to the Youngstown Metro Umpires Association today at 1:15 p.m.

The group meets at the St. Nick Activity Center on Shady Run Road.

Non-members are welcomed.

Judge Tom Miller at Curbstoners

BOARDMAN — Curbstone Coaches Association members will hear from international amateur and professional boxing judge Tom Miller of Mineral Ridge when Monday’s noon luncheon takes place at the Blue Wolf Catering Center.

The 48-year-old Miller was scheduled to work Saturday night’s Pavlik-Rubio undercard, but he has several upcoming fights ranging from a WBA featherweight title fight in Houston on Feb. 28 to a WBO cruiserweight title fight in Manchester, England on March 14.

Hubbard hall of fame

HUBBARD — The Hubbard High School All Sports Hall of Fame will induct 13 members at a banquet in April 25 at Saint Patrick’s Church Hall.

The new members are Ben Adams (football, 1950); Jeff Axel (football, 1968); Victoria Ball (track, 1977); Stephen Bartolin (baseball, 1968); Al “Buddy” Begeot (football, 1956); Dan Benish (football, 1979); Collenn Connolly (track, 1983); Ralph Edwards (football, 1962); Mike Holdford (soccer, 1996); Dan Modak (coach); Nick Novosel (basketball, 1960); Lindsay Randall (basketball, 1968) and John Theil (baseball, 1985).

KENT — University School blanked the Canfield High soccer team 11-0 in the OHSAA playoffs Saturday.

University led 5-0 at the break and outshot the Cardinals 40-2.

Vallinger repeats

AKRON — Mary Vallinger, a sophomore diver for Mount Union College, successfully defended her 1-meter diving championship Friday during the second day of the Ohio Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships.

Vallinger, from Poland High, won the 1-meter event with a score of 416.10 to account for one of the two Mount Union championships, and gained All-OAC recognition.

Sophomore Matt Carlozzi from Canfield High also was designated All-OAC by being a member of the Purple Raiders’ 800 freestyle relay team that placed second.

New soccer coach

CANTON — Dr. Chris Carmichael was hired as the men’s soccer coach at Malone Univ.

Malone is a professor in Malone’s Dept. of Natural Sciences and he played two seasons at Eastern Illinois.

Mickelson pulls away

LOS ANGELES — Phil Mickelson showed up early Saturday to work with swing coach Butch Harmon, then ran off four straight birdies late in his round for a 9-under 62 to build a four-shot lead going into the final round of the Northern Trust Open.

Five players had at least a share of the lead at one point in the third round, but what had been shaping up as a shootout soon turned into a showcase for Mickelson.

It began with an tee shot into 4 feet on the par-3 14th for the outright lead.

Wade lifts Heat

MIAMI — Dwyane Wade had 25 points and nine assists, including a big layup with 1 minute left, and the Miami Heat moved a step away from their closest pursuers in the Eastern Conference playoff race by beating the Philadelphia 76ers 97-91 on Saturday.

NEW YORK — Weathered dominated the $70,695 Rare Treat Handicap Saturday, beating Aristo by 71‚Ñ4 lengths at Aqueduct.

Weathered, the 2-5 favorite, took charge early and steadily widened the advantage in the 1 1-8 miles stakes for fillies and mares. Mike Luzzi was aboard for trainer Karl Grusmark as the chestnut 4-year-old earned her eighth win in 14 starts.

Junior gymnastics

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Jordyn Wieber, the reigning U.S. junior gymnastics champion, made quite an impression in her first major meet Saturday, winning the American Cup and joining the likes of Nadia Comaneci, Mary Lou Retton and Nastia Liukin.

Germany’s Fabian Hambuechen rebounded from his disappointing showing at the Beijing Olympics to win the men’s title.

Women’s bobsled

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — It still hadn’t sunk in for Nicola Minichiello. Shauna Rohbock probably felt the same way.

Minichiello, with Gillian Cooke tucked behind her, won the women’s competition at the bobsled world championships on Saturday, beating Rohbock and Elana Meyers in USA-1 by 0.38 seconds at Mount Van Hoevenberg.
