Landfill in Lisbon shuts down

LISBON (AP) — The Lisbon landfill that the Ohio EPA says led to environmental concerns and odor complaints for years has stopped operating under an agreement between its owners and the state.

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray says violations and unresolved problems led to the closing of the 42-acre A&L Salvage Landfill. The Ohio EPA says violations included excessive hydrogen sulfide and dust emissions, improper handling and disposal of asbestos waste and failure to properly cover waste.

A&L Salvage says it stopped accepting waste at the construction and demolition debris landfill Friday “due to economic and regulatory forces.” The company disagrees with state allegations and says outside studies did not find any harm to health or the environment.
