YOUNGSTOWN — Set-up for tonight’s big fight at the Chevrolet Centre finished 30 minutes ahead of schedule.
Brandon Bucar, the center’s assistant director and its director of facilities, said he’s finally able to put his feet on his desk and kick back for a bit for the first time today.
“We’re in great shape,” he said. “It went very smooth.”
Of course, Bucar and the rest of the staff at the center will be very busy tonight during Kelly Pavlik’s middleweight boxing title defense against Marco Antonio Rubio.
Top Rank employees started constructing the ring at 5 a.m. today.
Center workers began placing the 1,600 ringside seats on the floor about 9 a.m., as well as remove portions of the ice hockey dasher boards to allow those with ringside tickets to get on the floor.
The center was to be ready by 5 p.m. today. But the work started a little early and finished at 4:30 p.m.
“All the production work is complete,” Bucar said.
Work crews are polishing and sweeping, he said.
At 6 p.m., Bucar will hold a final walk-through of the center and hold a meeting with staff.
“I feel 100 percent confident the show will go on,” he joked.
A line of fight fans is starting to form to get into the center, Bucar said.
The center’s doors open at 7 p.m. The first fight is to start at 7:30 p.m.
Oh, by the way, the show is officially a sell-out with all 7,100 tickets gone. That’s the largest crowd for an event at the center since it opened in October 2005.
