YOUNGSTOWN — A free dinner for the needy and their families will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Nevels Temple, 939 Elm St., across from Wick Park on the North Side. Those wishing to attend must sign up at the church from noon to 2:30 p.m. today.

The menu includes baked chicken, turkey, ham, macaroni and cheese, string beans or corn, mashed potatoes, dressing, rolls, pop, punch or water, and desserts.

Boardman power outage

BOARDMAN — An equipment failure caused a power outage early Friday for 1,500 residents north of Western Reserve Road and south of Scotland Drive, said Paul Harkey, First Energy spokesman.

He said the first call came in at 4:22 a.m. Power was restored by 6:09 a.m. Not all of the 1,500 were without power that long, he said.

An exposed switch on a pole on Market Street at Forest Lake Drive burned, he said. It’s possible the failure was caused by salt kicking up from the road and hitting the switch, he said.

Woman’s death probed

NEW BEAVER, Pa. — State police in New Castle say they are investigating the death of a 26-year-old woman as a homicide.

The woman was found at 10 a.m. Friday at a home at 1146 Wampum New Galilee Road, police said. They did not release her name.

A 4-year-old child alerted workers who were trimming trees in the area, and they called for help, police said.

The Pennsylvania State Police Troop D Butler Major Case Team has been activated, police said. Police would like anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area between Thursday evening and Friday morning to call them at (724) 598-2211.

Vehicle-repair shop fire

YOUNGSTOWN — Firefighters used saws to cut through two metal doors to gain entry to Citywide Enterprises, a vehicle- repair shop at 1211 Randall Ave. on the North Side, the fire department said.

Fire was found in the rear of the building around 11:55 p.m. Thursday. Several vehicles had been set on fire, and flames spread to the walls and roof, reports show.

The cause is under investigation. Damage was estimated at $9,000.

Man shot in knee

YOUNGSTOWN — Jabbar Spires, 32, of Fairgreen Avenue was shot in the knee with a handgun after parking behind his house and knows who did it but wouldn’t tell police, reports show.

Spires told officers when they arrived Thursday night that there had been an argument with another man. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Substitute teachers

GROVE CITY, Pa. — Adults with a bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited college or university and a desire to work with children can become an emergency substitute teacher in the Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV Emergency Substitute Teacher Consortium.

The intermediate unit, which provides educational services to public schools in Mercer, Lawrence and Butler counties, will have its training session Monday, Thursday and Friday.

Facing drug charges

YOUNGSTOWN — A stolen gun was found and two men were arrested on drug charges after police checked out two cars that had backed into a convenience store parking lot on Wick Avenue, reports show.

The arrests were made around 7 p.m. Thursday. James Moore, 25, of Ohio Avenue, was charged with possession of cocaine, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property (gun). Police said the revolver was reported stolen in Kinsman in 2004.

Ryan Wallace, 20, of Ohio Avenue, was charged with possession of cocaine. Police said Moore had 32 packaged bags of powdered cocaine and Wallace had a medium-sized bag of crack cocaine.

Both were arraigned Friday in municipal court. Moore posted his $25,000 bond, and Wallace posted his $3,500 bond.
