Canfield’s King wins 100-yard backstroke


CLEVELAND — Canfield High’s Ryan King won the boys Division II 100-yard backstroke at the district swimming championships, hosted by Cleveland State on Friday.

The victory automatically qualified King for the state meet next week in Canton.

The top three placers in each event were automatic qualifiers. Other finishers could advance as at-large competitors, but that won’t be determined until late tonight or Sunday.

Canfield also advanced its boys 200 medley relay, but no times were reported.

Ben Haren of Lisbon also qualified in Div. II, finishing third in the 100 back.

For Mooney, Nick Boniface was 10th in the 50 free (22.50 seconds) and ninth in the 100 breast (1:03.46). Joe Boniface was 14th int he 50 free (23.13) and 13th in the 100 back (59.18).

No other results were reported.

Diving

In Div. II, Poland junior Trisha Valinger placed fifth and advanced to the state meet with a score of 352.65.

Canfield junior Elizabeth Wilkens placed 10th in Div. I diving with a score of 352.95.
