Bowling sectionals Saturday at Crest
WARREN — The high school bowling sectional will be Saturday at Crest Lanes starting with girls competition at 9 a.m.
District director Fran Miller reports that 24 teams from Mahoning and Trumbull county schools will be participating, along with Buckeye Local of Rayland.
Eight teams and individuals from non-advancing teams will move on to the district tournament at Wedgewood Lanes.
The boys sectional starting at 2 p.m. at Crest includes 25 teams from Mahoning and Trumbull as well as Buckeye Local’s boys squad.
Eight boys teams and individuals from non-qualifying teams will advance to the district tournament at Wedgewood. The girls district at Wedgewood is Feb. 28 while the boys district at Wedgewood is March 1.
OHSAA business for Metro umps
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Metro Umpires Association will hold an OHSAA baseball/softball meeting on Sunday at 1:15 p.m. at St. Nicholas Activity Center, 3801 Shady Run Road.
Umpires are reminded that they must attend at least four meetings to meet state requirements.

MINERAL RIDGE — The Weathersfield Local Schools board of education hired the following coaches on Wednesday: Sam Raketa, ninth grade basketball, Shawn Brown, seventh and eighth grade girls track and seventh and eighth grade football; Rod Hice, assistant varsity football coach; Phillip Frye, ninth grade football coach; Ryan Monti, student volunteer athletic trainer, and Tim Persin, volunteer varsity assistant football coach.
Mandated meeting in Austintown
AUSTINTOWN — The OHSAA-mandated spring sports meeting for students and parents is scheduled at Fitch High’s auditorium on March 9 at 6:30 p.m.
All spring sport participants from Austintown Middle School and Fitch High School, and their parents, are expected to attend.

Double-double in Bethany game
BETHANY, W. Va. — Lance Beckwith’s 27 points and Joe Testa’s double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds) led the Bethany College men’s basketball team to an 82-77 victory over visiting Westminster (7-16, 7-5) on Wednesday night.
Bethany is 14-10 overall and 8-3 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Ryne Murray led the Titans with 23 points, while Max Spinner added 14 and Rob Briggs scored 12.
Phantoms to auction autographed jerseys
YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley Phantoms will auction off two team jerseys autographed by Kelly Pavlik.
The middleweight champ autograph both a home black jersey and a road orange jersey that will be auctioned off during the first intermission of tonight’s game against the Motor City Machine.
Friday’s match-up will be preceded by Pavlik’s hydration weigh-in and a pre-fight rally for the Youngstown native’s title fight at the Centre starting at 6:45. Fans only need their ticket to the Phantoms-Machine game to be a part of the weigh-in and rally.

Leach, Texas Tech agree on deal
LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas Tech and coach Mike Leach have agreed on a new contract after months of contentious negotiations.
Leach and Texas Tech had essentially agreed on the financial terms of a five-year, $12.7 million deal. But Leach took issue with several clauses the school added when the sides were trading proposals.
He was prepared to keep coaching under the remaining two years of a five-year, $10 million contract.
Duncan lifts Spurs past Pistons, 83-79
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Tim Duncan had 18 points and 18 rebounds and Tony Parker added 19 points and 11 assists and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Detroit Pistons 83-79 Thursday night.
The Spurs broke a three-game road losing streak, while the Pistons dropped to 2-10 at home in the past six weeks. Allen Iverson led all scorers with 31 points, and Antonio McDyess added 13 points and 13 rebounds.
San Antonio led 64-58 going into the fourth, and although the Pistons got as close as three, George Hill’s fast-break dunk made it 73-66 with 6:35 left.
