Warren JFK’s Brown tops 1,000 points


WARREN — Nick Brown, a 6-foot-7 senior, scored 26 points and surpassed the 1,000-point career scoring mark Tuesday as the Warren JFK High boys basketball team turned back St. Thomas Aquinas’ late rally to win, 61-57.

Brown has 1,016 points and became only the third JFK player to top 1,000 points. The other two current JFK coach Bruce Timko (1,605) and Colin Clemente (1,126).

Brown also had 12 rebounds and has more than 500 for his career.

Boo Timko added 12 points and Carl Broadbent 10 to aid the Eagles (10-6).

Ryan Snyder had 17 points, including three 3-point goals, and Kyle Osco 15 with four 3-point goals, to lead Aquinas.

Austintown Fitch 56, Geneva 50

GENEVA — John Williams, Eric Braxton and Mike Miles each scored four points in the final period to help Fitch stave off Geneva.

Williams finished with 18 points while Braxton added 13 with 10 rebounds and Mike Miles eight points with six assists to aid Fitch (3-15).

Tyler Erb fired in a game-high 20 points to spur Geneva (3-16), which trailed by only 41-40 enter the last period.

Kennedy Catholic 77, Mooney 71, OT

YOUNGSTOWN — Kyle Randall, a 6-0 senior guard, scored 12 of his school-record 48 points in overtime to lead Kennedy Catholic, which outscored Mooney by 16-10 in the extra session.

Randall, who had 12 goals in 22 attempts and 22 free throws of 26 tries, also tied the score in regulation at 61-61 when he hit a goal and foul shot with about 30 seconds left.

Philip Kaikas added 14 points for Kennedy (20-2). including four 3-point goals.

Chuck Gruber had 17 points and nine rebounds. Eddie Reese had 12 points and four assists while John Stoops 11 points and nine rebounds to spark Mooney (8-9).

Youngstown Christian 72 Lowellville 34

YOUNGSTOWN — John Pecchia scored 19 points and made eight assists for the Eagles (17-3).

Olonzo Johnson scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds while Caleb Yanno had 11 points and three steals. Anthony Walker scored 10 points.

For the Rockets (9-9), Pat Minnie and Anthony Alfano each scored six points.
