Titans’ Scott achieves milestone

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Four area recruits have helped Rosanne Scott reach her 100th career victory as Westminster College women’s basketball coach.

Scott, a Struthers native in her seventh year at the Titans’ helm, achieved her 100th win with a 54-50 win over Chatham last week in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.

Sparking the milestone was Amy Dolsak, a junior guard from McDonald High, who scored a career-high 25 points, including the go-ahead jumper with 51 seconds left that gave Westminster a 50-48 lead.

Dolsak made 10-for-15 from the field and also had five rebounds, while her sister, Emily Dolsak, a freshman forward also from McDonald High, contributed eight points and nine rebounds.

Gina Brunetti, a senior guard from Mooney High and Canfield, also had eight points.

Last Saturday, the Dolsaks teamed up again for a 1-2 scoring punch, but Westminster lost to Thiel, 86-60. Amy had 18 and and Emily 15. Kaitlin McCarthy, a sophomore guard from Lowellville High, added 12 points and four assists while Brunetti had 11 points.

Amber Bodrick, a senior from Mooney, led Thiel with 32 points and 10 rebounds on 13-28 shooting.

Scott, a former Struthers High and Bethany College star player, has a 100-88 record entering today’s game at Bethany.

While at Bethany, Scott was a two-time All-American honorable mention before graduating in 2000.

Scott was hired as the Westminster coach at age 24 in April 2002 after two years as an assistant. She was then the youngest collegiate coach in the nation at any level.

She also has led Westminster to two appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament in the last four seasons, and to the PAC championship in 2005.

Scott’s team is struggling this year (7-15, 4-9 PAC) after two straight successful seasons of 17-11 last year and 22-7 in 2006-07 — the best mark in the 36-year history of the Westminster women’s program.

Despite the current losing record, Scott’s four area players are enjoying outstanding seasons.

Amy Dolsak, Brunetti and McCarthy are starters while Emily Dolsak sees a lot of playing time.

Amy Dolsak leads Westminster in scoring (13.9) and rebounding (8.4) and is second in steals (20).

Emily Dolsak is No. 1 in field-goal percentage (56.2 on 82-for-146) and No. 2 in rebounding (5.9).

McCarthy leads the team in assists (4.7) and steals (23), while also averaging 10.2 points and 3.2 rebounds. Brunetti is No.1 in free-throw shooting percentage (82.4 on 28-for-34) and averages 11.2 points and 3.6 rebounds.
