Poland romps to move into a first-place tie


NILES — Ben Donlow’s 25 points Tuesday led the Poland High boys basketball team to a 92-73 victory over Niles.

David Baker’s 20 points helped the Bulldogs (13-4, 5-1 All-American Conference Red Tier) move into a first-place tie with Canfield (12-5, 5-1).

Niko Fatimus scored 18 points and his brother, Louis Fatimus, also reached double figure with 10 points.

For the Red Dragons (5-13, 1-6), Joe Moss scored 21 points. Also in double figures were Saul Vaughn with 17, Ryan Frantz with 13 and Bobby Marino with 10.

Howland 76, Beaver Local 36

LISBON — The Tigers (13-6, 5-2) put the AAC Red Tier contest out of reach 60-27 by the end of the third quarter.

Kyle Spence, Tyler Scott and Jared Kirin scored 19, 16 and 14 points respectively for Howland.

Grady Gunter and Mow Mow Thompson each had seven points for Beaver Local (0-18, 0-6).

Hubbard 56, Struthers 52

HUBBARD — A strong fourth quarter allowed the Eagles to pull out the AAC White Tier decision.

The Eagles (13-6, 4-3) trailed 31-17 at the break and were still behind 37-32 entering the final eight minutes.

Mike Lopuchivsky scored eight of his 10 points in a 24-point fourth quarter to spark Hubbard.

Kurtis Drummond led the Eagles with 18 points.

Matt Durkin scored 24 points for the Wildcats (6-12, 2-6).

Champion 63, Girard 47

GIRARD — The Golden Flashes rolled to a 32-13 halftime lead, then held on to prevail in the AAC Blue Tie game.

David Barnes paced Champion with 15 points. Tyler Day added 13. Joe Augustine paced the Indians (1-18, 0-9) with 18 points.
