Lowellville official seriously injured in altercation

STRUTHERS — Lowellville Tax Commissioner Gerald Colanieri is in danger of losing sight in his right eye as the result of an altercation in the early hours Saturday in the parking lot at Donavito’s Italian Grille on Bridge Street.

Colanieri has been told by doctors that he has a 2 percent chance of getting his sight back, and may also need reconstructive surgery on his face, said Lowellville Mayor James Iudiciani on Monday.

The mayor said Colanieri went to St. Elizabeth Health Center sometime after the episode and was then transferred by helicopter to a Cleveland hospital for eye surgery, and returned home late Sunday. He was called back to Cleveland on Monday to see a reconstruction specialist, Iudiciani said.
