AUSTINTOWN — A Certificate of Thanks was presented to Leah Brooks, of the YWCA of Youngstown, who was the featured speaker at the Feb. 9 meeting of the Rotary Club of Austintown. Rotary Club President Michael Cafaro made the presentation.

Brooks, who spoke on “YWCA on the Move in Youngstown,” explained that the YWCA was built in 1911 and has served many functions over the years, providing such services as inexpensive and safe housing for single women, immigrant shelter, vocational skill center, recreation, and fitness. Currently it offers single parent housing, supports school latchkey programs at Watson and Woodside in Austintown, and provides social work and counseling.

She said plans are under way to demolish the pool space and to put in a cybercafe, day-care area, and empowerment rooms for job counseling.

Also speaking at the event was Susan Burney of the YWCA.
