Man charged with assault in stabbing at club

STAFF REPORT

WARREN — A city man has been charged with felonious assault for reportedly stabbing a Champion man in the back with a knife during an argument at the National Association For Uniformed Services Club on Nevada Street Southwest.

Richard W. Humenik Jr., 47, of Stewart Drive Northwest, pleaded innocent to the charge Friday in Warren Municipal Court. Judge Thomas Gysegem set bond at $25,000.

Police said they were called to the club about 9:30 p.m. Thursday after a report that a 45-year-old Oak Hill Drive man had been stabbed in the back.

The stabbing victim said he had been playing pool with another man and an argument began over the pool game. The victim said he walked away from the other man when he felt the knife enter his back.

The victim went into the parking lot to continue the fight, but the other man fled in a pickup truck.

Officers found the truck a short distance away on West Market Street and arrested Humenik, who was bleeding from his face and jaw.

Both men were transported to area hospitals for treatment. The alleged victim was in Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital. A condition report was unavailable.

Humenik is due back in court at 2:15 p.m. March 2. If convicted, he faces up to eight years in prison.
