Canfield’s swimmers runners-up in sectional


AKRON — Canfield’s 200-yard medley relay team placed first and the Cardinals also placed second in the 200 free relay and fourth in the 400 free relay, to finish runner-up to Walsh Jesuit for the team title at Friday’s Division II sectional swimming meet at Firestone High School.

The winning 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay consisted of seniors Ryan King and John Stefanski, junior Garrett Trebilcock and sophomore Gavin Trebilcock.

Stefanski, seniors Scott Kamenitsa and Sam Garea and junior Steven Dalvin were on the 400 free relay.

The top two in each event automatically qualify for next week’s district meet at Cleveland State University, while other top finishers will earn qualifying berths based on statewide times.

King also won the 100 back, while Garrett Trebilcock placed fourth in the 200 IM and third in the 100 butterfly, and his younger brother Gavin was third in the 50 free and third in the 100 breast.

Stefanski was fifth in the 100 free and Kamenitsa was fourth in the 200 free and fourth in the 500 free. Dalvin took sixth in the 200 free and eighth in the 100 free, while Garea was sixth in the 200 IM and the 100 fly. Sophomore Drew Welham was ninth in the 100 back and sophomore Ryan O’Malley was ninth in the 100 breast.

Mooney junior Nick Boniface was fifth in the 50 free with a new school record of 22.47 and fourth in the 100 breast. Freshman Joe Boniface was seventh in the 50 free and 10th in the 100 back..

Lisbon senior Ben Haren was fourth in the 100 back, Liberty’s Brandon Staley placed ninth in the 100 fly and 10th in the 200 IM and Western Reserve’s Brian Stahl placed seventh in the 100 back.

Poland was eighth in the 200 medley relay.

This is the first season for Division II boys competition.

Division I

Boardman sophomore Mike Henson placed fifth in the 100 backstroke and junior Ali Azeem was eighth in the 100 fly to help the Spartans tie for seventh in the Div. I meet. Boardman placed fifth in the 200 free relay, sixth in the 200 medley relay and ninth in the 400 free relay.

Warren Harding’s 200 medley relay placed fifth and its 200 free relay was fourth.

Harding junior Quinn Hernon placed eighth in the 200 free, senior Graham Clouser was 10th in the 50 free and junior Niko Williams was sixth in the 100 fly.
