Canfield too strong for Niles; Poland rolls past Beaver Local


NILES — Mike Podolsky scored 19 points as the Canfield High boys basketball team took a 71-38 decision from Niles to remain atop the All-American Conference Red Tier standings.

Anoop Bal added 11 points for the Cardinals (12-5, 5-1) who led 32-23 at the break.

Cory Floyd scored 10 points for Niles (5-12, 1-5).

Poland 88, Beaver Local 66

POLAND — Gannon Hulea celebrated Senior Night by leading the Bulldogs (13-4, 4-1 AAC Red) with 16 points.

Niko Fatimus and Ben Donlow each scored 14 points while Louis Fatimus netted 12. Luke Wollet made seven assists while David Baker pulled down nine rebounds.

For the Beavers (0-17, 0-5), Brady Gunter sank 5 3-pointers and scored 21 points. Shawn Mercer scored 14 points while Travis Lynch had 10.

Both teams and the officials warmed up in “Stay Strong 31” jerseys in support of Poland freshman Mitch Dinopoulos on “Mitch Night.” A member of the freshman team, Dinopoulos is commuting daily to University Hospital in Cleveland for chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Fans designed T-shirts commemorating Mitch’s battle and wore blue “Stay Strong” wristbands.

Liberty 71, Girard 65

HUBBARD — The Leopards (6-11, 2-5 AAC White) outscored the Indians 12-6 in overtime.

Teshawn Letlow, Floyd Showers, Blair Williams and Anthony Cleveland paced the Liberty scoring attack with 17, 16, 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Bobby Thompson, Kory Hopkinson, Kurtis Drummond and Mike Lupuchovsky led the Eagles (12-6, 3-3) with 19, 15, 13 and 12 points.

Lakeview 56, Struthers 45

CORTLAND — Joel Davis collected 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Lakeview (13-4, 5-1 AAC White).

Justin Clark added 10 points for the first-place Bulldogs, who barged to a 34-18 halftime lead.

Ed Ryczaj and Bobby Harden had nine points each for Struthers (5-12, 1-6).

Newton Falls 66, LaBrae 51

LEAVITTSBURG — Marcus Fowler fired in 22 points to lead a well-balanced attack for Newton Falls.

Todd Medallis added 15 points, Cody Dillon 13 and Brian Sole 11 to aid the Tigers (15-2, 7-1 AAC Blue), who outscored LaBrae in the fourth quarter, 27-13.

Newton Falls remained in second place in the league, one game back of Campbell

Steve Woodyard had 16 points for the Vikings (10-7, 3-5).

Campbell 75, Girard 39

GIRARD — The Red Devils (13-5, 8-0 AAC Blue) rolled to a commanding 43-16 lead by intermission. Germaine Somrajit scored 13 points, while Nate Hodge and Jerah’me Williams each had 12 and Dorian Jones 10.

Joe Augustine paced Girard (1-17, 0-8) with 13 points.

Champion 49, Brookfield 38

BROOKFIELD — Ian Barnes led the Golden Flashes (7-10, 4-4 AAC Blue) with 14 points. David Barnes scored 13.

For the Warriors (4-13, 2-6), Anthony Uberti scored 15 points while Ryan Shugarts’ 11 points included nine free throws.
