Akron 63, Ball St. 55

AKRON — Chris McKnight scored 13 points as Akron (16-8, 7-3 Mid-American Conference) won its seventh straight. Akron pulled to a 10 point lead at 6:39 of the first quarter and never looked back. Akron was ahead 34-27 at the break, and Ball State never had the lead. While Ball State went 21-of-54 from the field to Akron’s 18-of-48, the Zips pulled ahead on free throws. Akron scored 21 points from the foul line compared with the Cardinals’ 6. Ball State (10-12, 5-5) was led by Rob Giles’ 17 points, including five 3-pointers. Jarrod Jones had a game-high 12 rebounds for the Cardinals. Darryl Roberts scored 11 for Akron and Nate Linhart added 11 boards.

Bowling Green 59, Toledo 54

TOLEDO — Darryl Clements scored 15 points and made three foul shots in the last 30 seconds to seal Bowling Green’s victory. Chris Knight added 14 points and seven rebounds for Bowling Green (14-9, 7-3 Mid-American Conference). Clements finished 5-for-7 from the line with four assists. A struggling Toledo (4-20, 2-8 MAC) fought back from a nine-point deficit at the half to within a basket but couldn’t hold on, dropping its sixth game in a row. Jonathan Amos came off the bench to carry the Rockets with a double-double, tallying 11 rebounds and 21 points on 13-of-19 free throw shooting.

W. Michigan 76, Ohio 62

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — David Kool shot 4-for-7 from 3-point range and scored 24 points to lead Western Michigan. Shawntes Gary sank two consecutive jump shots to put the Broncos ahead to stay, 7-5, 4:16 into the game. Gary shot 5-for-6 from the field and finished with 14 points. Western Michigan (8-15, 5-5 Mid-American) led 34-28 at halftime and outrebounded the Bobcats 28-20 for the game. Tommy Freeman was 6-for-8 from the field — all 3-pointers — and 2-for-3 from the line, leading Ohio (12-11, 5-5) with 20 points.

Cincinnati 71, St. John’s, NY 61

CINCINNATI — Freshman Yancy Gates scored a career-high 21 points for Cincinnati. Deonta Vaughn added 14 points and Mike Williams had 12 for the Bearcats, who shot a season-high .628 (27-for-43) from the field while extending their winning streak to three games and five of their last six.
