Obamas join crowd at Ford’s Theatre to celebrate $25M renovation
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama joined a crowd of Hollywood celebrities and Washington heavy hitters at a gala celebrating the $25 million renovation of Ford’s Theatre.
The crowd on hand to honor Abraham Lincoln on the eve of his 200th birthday clapped enthusiastically as the first couple walked down the theater’s aisle. “Hail to the Chief” played as the two passed.
The Obamas sat front row center to watch the evening’s performance. Obama, who has evoked Lincoln’s legacy in his campaign, was expected to make remarks after the program.
The theater where Lincoln was assassinated is reopening after an 18-month face-lift that includes new, more comfortable seats, a modern lobby and new dressing rooms.
