National anthem singer to be chosen for fight
YOUNGSTOWN — Team Pavlik and Vindy.com announced that the singer of the national anthem for the Kelly Pavlik/Marco Rubio Fight on Feb. 21 will be revealed Feb. 18 live at The Chevrolet Centre. Interested singers can still enter by going to Vindy.com. The finalists will perform for a panel of judges from Team Pavlik and The Vindicator that Wednesday evening. The public is welcome to come cheer them on.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, and admission is free.
Tickets are still available for the fight on the 21st and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com or at the Chevrolet Centre Box Office.
Also that evening, Team Pavlik and Valley24.com will announce the winners of the Valley24.com Pavlik-Rubio Ring Girl Competition.
Murals of galaxy on display at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University’s Ward Beecher Planetarium has been selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to permanently display two full-color, mural-sized images of the galaxy Messier 101. The images were digitally photographed by NASA’s Great Observatories.
The murals, located inside Ward Beecher Hall, were to be unveiled in a ceremony at 1:30 p.m. today.
The unveiling also kicks off a series of events at the planetarium this year in observance of 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy.
Basketball team helping ill player
POLAND — A freshman basketball player will be recognized at Friday’s basketball game when the Bulldogs face Beaver. Mitch Dinopoulos is undergoing treatment for a serious illness. The theme of the night is Stay Strong 31, Mitch’s team number.
The night is underwritten by National City Bank, now PNC.
Students will be able to buy T-shirts and design the backs in support of their classmate. Varsity team members and coaches will wear “Stay Strong 31” shirts, and Beaver players will don the shirts during warm-up. Beaver coaches are to wear the shirts throughout the game.
About 750 wristbands bearing the Stay Strong slogan were produced and sold to students, parents and community members in support of Mitch.

YOUNGSTOWN — Angels with Extra Blessings and Angels That Give Love, two area ministries, will sponsor a Valentine’s Day prayer dinner for the homeless, needy and senior citizens at 3 p.m. Friday at 1555 Belmont Ave.
Man says he was shot while out walking
YOUNGSTOWN — Mark T. Colpetro, 27, of Willis Avenue was shot Tuesday afternoon. He told police he was walking somewhere on the North Side, possibly near Norwood Avenue, when a man in a black hoodie approached around 2 p.m. and shot Colpetro in the chest, reports show.
Police said Colpetro arrived at St. Elizabeth Health Center in a private car, and two men in the car fled after dropping off Colpetro. His condition was not available.
Truck crash blocks road
SHARON, Pa. — U.S. Route 62 was blocked for about three hours Tuesday morning after a tractor-trailer rolled onto its side on a curve. Police Capt. Travis Martwinski said it’s possible the load of scrap steel in the trailer shifted, causing it to tip over. The accident happened at 9:36 a.m. The driver, Richard Titus, 33, of Petrolia, Pa., was not seriously injured.
