Mathews catches fire in OT, pulls away from Southington


YOUNGSTOWN — The Mathews High School boys basketball team went on a 10-0 run in the second overtime to post a 63-55 victory over Southington Wednesday in a Northeastern Athletic Conference contest at the Chevrolet Centre.

Chris Morgan, who grabbed 14 rebounds, and Corey Lumley paced the Mustangs’ (11-5, 9-4) balanced scoring attack with 15 points apiece.

Collin Bowser and Rick Sommers each had 11.

Brad Sherwood and Brad Gilanyi, who pulled down 10 rebounds, paced the Wildcats (9-8, 9-5) with 19 and 17 points, respectively.

Bristol 51, Lordstown 34

YOUNGSTOWN — The Panthers (5-12, 5-8 NEC) held a 27-15 lead at intermission, then held off the Red Devils’ (4-13, 2-11) second-half rally at the Chevrolet Centre.

Andrew Holko, who connected on three 3-point baskets, paced Bristol with 20 points.

John Evans added 16 and Zack Elza finished with 10.

Steve Cribley and Billy Wright led Lordstown with 16 and 11 points.
