Hines helps East topple Chaney; Newton Falls captures Blue title
YOUNGSTOWN — Bethany Hines had 11 points and three assists Wednesday to lead the East High girls basketball team to a 47-37 victory over Chaney.
Briana Dawson and Chelsea Bennet each scored eight points for the Panthers (9-8, 2-1 Steel Valley Conference).
For the Cowgirls (7-9, 1-3), Alyssa Sykes had 13 points, four rebounds and five steals.
Ursuline 59, East Cleveland Shaw 37
YOUNGSTOWN — Dominique Jenkins had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Irish (8-7).
Lucia Petrus and Aurielle Irizarry each scored seven points while Janeice Whitehead made four steals.
For Shaw (9-7), Lenay Simms scored 11 points.
Poland 50, Niles 31
NILES — Lauren Tadla scored 15 points for the Bulldogs (8-12, 2-6 All-American Conference Red). Missy Haug scored nine points. For the Red Dragons (0-20, 0-8), Megan McDermott scored 13 points and Amanda Reichard 10.
Canfield 55, West Branch 44
CANFIELD — Jillian Halfhill had 28 points in the non-league game.
The Cardinals (12-7) were ahead by two points after one quarter, but bumped it up to 31-22 at the half.
Emilee Zets had 18 points while Michele Sosnick scored 15 for West Branch (11-6).
Brookfield 48, LaBrae 42
LEAVITTSBURG — Ashley Swezey scored 18 points and made six rebounds for the Warriors (11-8, 6-4 AAC Blue). Rachel Gentile had 12 points and six rebounds.
For the Vikings (3-15, 0-8), Emily Potter scored 14 points and Bayle 12.
Newton Falls 46, Campbell 35
NEWTON FALLS — Kelsey McGregor had 14 points and Blair Chapman had 12 to spark Newton Falls, which won the All-American Conference Blue Tier crown with a 10-0 record.
Sarah Such’s 11 points paced Campbell (11-7, 5-4).
Champion 56, Girard 35
CHAMPION — Freshman Paige Loychik had 16 points for Champion while senior Erika Stevens had 15 as the Golden Flashes took a 22-5 lead after one quarter.
Champion converted 22 of 43 free throws, while Girard sank 8 of 19. Katelynne Brainard’s 10 points paced the Indians.
Beaver Local 40, Lakeview 35
CORTLAND — The Beavers (12-7, 5-1) held the Bulldogs (4-16, 1-7) to 12 points in the first half in recording the All American Conference White Tier win.
Macy Weber scored 14 points for Beaver Local.
Mackenzie Palette led Lakeview with 14 points and Ki’lara Rodgers pulled down 16 of 38 rebounds.
Southeast 50, Crestwood 43
RAVENNA — The Pirates (6-12, 3-10) rushed out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter and they were ahead 37-24 at the end of the third period. Mya Levels scored 17 points for Southeast. Molly Weingart paced Crestwood with nine points.
