Ward surgery

PITTSBURGH — Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward underwent minor shoulder surgery this week but apparently will not need an operation to repair the right knee he injured during the AFC championship game.

Ward sprained his knee against Baltimore on Jan. 18, but recovered to make two catches for 43 yards as the Steelers beat Arizona 27-23 in the Super Bowl on Feb. 1.

After the Steelers won their second NFL title in four seasons, Ward said he might need knee surgery.

The shoulder operation was a routine procedure that should not disrupt Ward’s preparation for next season.

Cavs’ Mo Williams makes All-Star game

NEW YORK — Mo Williams is headed to the All-Star game after all.

Twice snubbed, the Cleveland Cavaliers point guard was chosen Tuesday by NBA commissioner David Stern. Williams will replace Toronto Raptors forward Chris Bosh, who will miss the game because of a sprained right knee.

Williams wasn’t chosen by Eastern Conference head coaches as a reserve, then was passed over by Stern in favor of Boston’s Ray Allen when Jameer Nelson had to be replaced because of injury.

Williams, who is averaging 17.1 points, will be making his first All-Star game appearance.

Chuck Noll Avenue

PITTSBURGH — Planners may name a street to be built near the Pittsburgh Steelers’ stadium after Chuck Noll, the coach who led the team to its first four Super Bowl wins.

Plans for an amphitheater near Heinz Field that were approved by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission include a one-block street named Chuck Noll Way.

City officials say they’ve received no formal request to name the proposed street. City Council must approve any such request.

Other streets near Heinz Field and PNC Park, where the Pirates play, are named for Pittsburgh sports heroes.

Hockey arena proposed for Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio — The owner of the minor-league Dayton Bombers hockey team says he wants to build a hockey arena in downtown Dayton.

The Bombers currently play at the Nutter Center in suburban Fairborn.

Costa Papista is proposing a location where the arena could be connected to a major downtown hotel and Dayton Convention Center.

Papista said Tuesday that the keys to moving the project forward — at a cost of under $30 million — are retaining the right developer and gaining the support of the community.

Margarito suspension

Antonio Margarito’s boxing license has been revoked for at least one year by the California State Athletic Commission for the illegal wraps discovered on his hands before his loss last month to Sugar Shane Mosley.

The commission’s decision effectively bans Margarito, an American-born fighter who now lives in Mexico, from boxing in this country, since other states generally uphold such suspensions.

Margarito’s trainer, Javier Capetillo, also lost his license for at least one year.
