Fisher plans run for Voinovich’s Senate seat
Sen. George V. Voinovich, R-Ohio
WASHINGTON (AP) — Ohio Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher is considering a run for the U.S. Senate in 2010.
The Democrat filed paperwork Monday for an exploratory committee for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Sen. George Voinovich, who has announced he will not seek re-election.
The 57-year-old Fisher has been lieutenant governor since 2006 and serves as the state’s development director. He was Ohio’s attorney general from 1991 to 1995 and lost the 1998 governor’s race to Republican Bob Taft.
Spokeswoman Lauren Goode says Fisher expects to decide soon about campaigning for the Senate seat.
Former Republican congressman Rob Portman already has thrown his hat into the race. U.S. Reps. Tim Ryan and Zack Space are among other potential Democratic candidates.
