Police probe fight near city bar

staff report

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are investigating an assault on a man whose leg was broken in a fight.

Police were called to Jay Jay’s bar on Market Street at 2:21 a,m. Saturday, where they found “several hundred drunken people milling around, screaming and yelling,” according to a police report.

A 19-year-old Niles man was lying on the ground, crying that his leg was broken, police said.

Police chased a vehicle leaving the scene and caught up with a suspect.

The driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old Youngstown woman, said she and her passenger, a 22-year-old Campbell man, were outside the bar when the fight erupted.

Back at the bar, drunken patrons were yelling, screaming, crying, and some were on the ground praying while surrounding the victim, police said.

Some witnesses identified the Campbell man as the person who broke the victim’s leg, but because of conflicting information, he was released, police said.

The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center. Police told him to contact police if he wishes to pursue charges.
