Buick Invitational

SAN DIEGO — Camilo Villegas accomplished his goal Friday, keeping it around par and keeping the lead while playing the tough South Course in all the elements a golfer dreads, from rain to wind to cold.

John Rollins was one shot behind, and achieved more than anyone imagined.

On a tough day for scoring, Rollins holed out a 9-iron for eagle and made six birdies on his way to an 8-under 64 that at least gave Villegas some company.

Villegas teed off in a steady rain, and when he reached the exposed holes along the Pacific bluffs, more rain arrived equipped with gusts up to 25 mph that made the San Diego weather feel more like Sun Valley.

Pro Bowl blackout

HONOLULU — The NFL has granted Hawaii a second TV blackout extension for the Pro Bowl.

The league said Friday that Sunday’s all-star game at Aloha Stadium must be sold out by 11:30 a.m. today — 24 hours before kickoff — or the contest won’t be televised in the state.

The original 72-hour deadline came and went Thursday, with the league granting a one-day extension. It passed Friday morning with about 1,500 tickets still available, about half the number that remained Thursday.

The Pro Bowl has sold out, usually weeks in advance, every year since moving to the 50,000-seat Aloha Stadium in 1980.

Readers of the Record could trade in coupons for voodoo-doll likenesses of U.S. players at Blockbuster video stores in Mexico City on Friday. Fans were instructed to use the doll to wish for a Mexico goal.

“Hold a needle firmly between your thumb and index finger and prick slowly the part of the doll where you want to affect the opponent,” the instructions say. The back of the doll’s jersey read, “Gringos.”
