East rallies past JFK for ninth win


YOUNGSTOWN —Kenny Carter scored 18 points to go with six rebounds, three steals and two assists as the East High boys basketball team outscored Warren JFK 25-19 in the final quarter to rally for a 59-55 victory in a Steel Valley Conference game Friday.

Jarelle Burt added 17 points, four rebounds, two steals, five assists and two blocks for the Panthers (9-5, 2-0), who rallied from a 28-18 halftime deficit. Trumane Jenkins had 13 points and five steals.

Nick Brown led JFK (9-4, 0-1) with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Boo Timko added 10 points, five assists and four rebounds.

Boardman 58, Massillon Perry 47

MASSILLON — J.T. Moore had 13 points and 18 rebounds and Boardman made 24 of 40 from the free throw line to hold off Perry in a Federal League game.

Ryan Pesta added 15 points and Chase Hammond had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Spartans (7-9, 3-4), who outscored the Panthers 21-9 in the fourth. Devron Martin had eight points in his second game back this season.

Jordan Humphrey scored 11 and Tyler Light 10 for Perry (7-9, 2-5).

Chaney 62, Mooney 54

YOUNGSTOWN — The Cowboys (4-9, 1-0), ahead 43-35 at the end of the third quarter, held on for the Steel Valley Conference victory as they tossed in 6 of 8 free throws in the last 52 seconds of the contest.

Ken Strong paced Chaney with 21 points. Myke Parker added 18 and he grabbed eight rebounds. Ronnie Martino led the Cardinals (6-8, 0-2) with 22 points and four rebounds.

Mathews 65, Jamestown (Pa.) 57

VIENNA — Corey Lumley scored 22 points and Chris Morgan added 16 to lead Mathews (10-5), which took a 52-38 lead into the fourth quarter.

Justin Wells scored 20 points, Tommy Shannon had 11 and Nick Miller 10 for Jamestown.

Mathews was originally scheduled to play Warren Christian but the game was canceled.

Louisville 71, West Branch 65

BELOIT — Mike Brown scored 21 points, including six 3-point goals, to key a balanced Louisville offense in a Northeastern Buckeye Conference game.

Branlon Mathie added 15 points, Jonny Minster 13 and Toby Minster 10 to aid the winners (11-5, 9-3), who made nine 3-point goals.

Evan Campbell scored 18 points for West Branch (5-10, 2-10), while Matt Tafe added 16, including four 3-point goals, and Greg Hanlon 15 points.
