Blaze destroys South Side vacant home


YOUNGSTOWN — A vacant home on the city’s South Side was destroyed by a fire.

Firefighters responded at 1:06 a.m. Friday to a fire at 34 Parnell St. The house was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.

A fire hydrant across the street was frozen and in an attempt to thaw it, the stem broke off, according to a fire report.

The house, valued at $5,000, was allowed to burn down. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
