Struthers girls now 6-0 in league
LISBON — Helen Hird’s 15 points on Wednesday led the Struthers High girls basketball team to a 60-52 victory over Beaver Local and a share of the All-American Conference White crown.
The Wildcats will own the crown outright with either another league win or a Beaver Local league loss.
Katelyn Ardale scored 14 points while Dana Matthews added 10 for the Wildcats (12-5, 6-0).
For the Beavers (11-7, 4-2), Sam Cianni scored 18 points while Macy Weber had 13 points and five rebounds.
Liberty 51, Lakeview 38
YOUNGSTOWN — Melissa Dykes scored 14 points and Chi Chi Merriweather pulled down 15 rebounds as Liberty coasted past Lakeview at the Chevrolet Center.
The Leopards (8-9-2-4) held a slim edge in rebounds 45-43.
Mackenzie Palette led the Bulldogs with 10 points.
Howland 71, Niles 22
HOWLAND — Freshman Taylor Williams had career-highs of 24 points and 21 rebounds as Howland (16-0, 6-0 AAC Red) rolled.
The 6-foot-2 Williams came in off the bench early after leading scorer Kelly Barzak sustained a high-ankle sprain.
Williams filled in and played about 27 minutes.
Senior Megan Long was the only other Howland player in double figures with 14 points.
Barzak is averaging 21 points per game.
Megan McDermott’s 10 points paced Niles (0-17, 0-7).
Canfield 63, Poland 30
CANFIELD — Jillian Halfhill tossed in 21 points and Canfield led from start to finish.
Kendal Malsch and Kalie Luklan each added 10 points for the Cardinals (10-7, 4-2 AAC Red).
The Cardinals outrebounded the Bulldogs 36-28 and forced 19 turnovers, while making just six.
Poland (7-10, 1-5) was led by Leanna Yeager and Lauren Tadla with 10 points each.
Campbell 61, LaBrae 36
CAMPBELL — Tashira Uceta and Jayaira Grhim each scored 16 points for the Red Devils (10-5, 4-2 AAC Blue). Uceta also had six assists and seven steals while Grhim had four assists.
Iesha Moses contributed eight points and 11 rebounds while Brande Ellington had six points and seven rebounds.
For the Vikings (2-13, 0-9), Emily Potter scored 15 points.
Wellsville 69, Southern 55
SALINEVILLE — Wellsville placed all five starters in double figures but still needed a fourth quarter rally to defeat Southern.
Mikqala Tipton led Wellsville (5-11, 4-7 Inter Tri-County League Tier Two) with 18 points. P.J. Williams had 16 points, while Lindsay Koontz had 13 and Sarah Drysdale and Irene Kiser added 10 each.
Wellsville led 46-44 going into the final quarter, but outscored Southern 23-11.
Southern (2-13, 2-8) was led by Ashley Russell with 20 points and Maddy Dowling with 16.
