Mooney/Ursuline hockey wins pair


STRONGSVILLE — The Mooney/Ursuline Thunder won two games and lost one in the North Coast High School Hockey League playoffs over the weekend.

On Friday night the Thunder defeated the Fremont Ice Wolves, 4-1. Dean Macklen scored two goals in a span of 19 seconds to break a 1-1 tie. Vince Fornes and Alex Figuly also scored for the Thunder, the No. 7 seed. Macklen, Phil Tate, Cory Timmings, Ryan Demen, Phil Monrean and Brian Helbley had assists.

On Saturday night the Thunder defeated No. 2 seed Medina Bees, 3-2 in overtime on Ryan Demyen’s game-winning goal.

Also scoring goals were Bryan Styers and Tate. Helbley, Macklen and Bronson Lamoncha had assists.

On Sunday the Thunder lost to No. 3 seed Lakewood Club Rangers, 4-2. Macklen scored both Thunder goals on assists by Demyen, Tate and Cory Timmings.

Goalie Jonathan Welsh stopped 96 shots in the three games.

The Thunder will play again Wednesday night in a consolation bracket game.
