Captains named
YOUNGSTOWN — Juniors Tom Clayton, C.J. Morris, Anthony Porter and Aaron Swenson have been named team captains of the Penguin baseball team.
Each of the four are in the capacity for the first time in their careers.
Clayton (Poland), Morris (Canfield) and Porter (Boardman) are from Mahoning County.
The Penguins will hold their first full practice of the spring today at Valley Sports Ltd. in Struthers.
The season opens Feb. 20 at 2008 College World Series runner-up Georgia.

Lakeview’s Moody chooses Cornell
CORTLAND — Lakeview senior Ben Moody will continue his football career at Cornell.
Moody (6-3, 180), who set six school rushing records during his career, was a first team all-league running back and was second team all-district selection for the Bulldogs. He carried 138 times for 1,228 yards and 17 TDs this season. He also played defensive back.
As a junior, he was a big reason why Lakeview advanced to the Division III regional finals.
Moody chose I-AA Cornell over Air Force, a Div. I program.
Fitch, Boardman girls in Federal tourney
Boardman High will play host to Massillon Perry in the first round of the Federal League girls basketball tournament Tuesday night.
The junior varsity game will begin at 6 p.m. with the varsity game to follow.
Boardman was the third seed in the tournament, based on the regular season league standings. Perry was the No. 6 seed.
Austintown Fitch, the No. 8 seed, will travel to Canton McKinley, the No. 1 seed, Tuesday, with the same scheduled game times.
The second round of the tournament will be held at home sites on Saturday.
Pair set marks
BOARDMAN — Canfield sophomores Riley Emery and Joe Geiser each set single season scoring marks in a 10-2 win over the Brush hockey team.
Emery broke Andy Davis’ total points record (2003-2004 season) of 41, with three goals and three assists to bring his season total to 44 (25/19). Geiser scored five goals to bring his season total to 28, surpassing Sam Crowe’s mark of 26 (2003-2004).
Max Siegle added two goals for the Cards (10-13).
Ellks leads the way
KENT — Kayla Ellks took fifth in the 55 hurdles (9.1 seconds) and sixth in the long jump (15-11) for Lordstown in a non-scoring track meet at Kent State.
Courtney Beatty broke the school record with a 6:03.3 mile and the 4x800 relay team of Beatty, Madita Schroedter, Hilary Minton and Bethany Linert took sixth (11:28.8).
Grove City honors
GROVE CITY, Pa. — Grove City College will recognize three men as the inaugural recipients of the college’s Athletic Heritage Award, which will be presented in conjunction with the school’s athletic hall of fame inductions.
The Heritage Award honorees are Benjamin Jones, Dr. James Loveless and Harvey Miller.
The hall of fame inductees are John Barr, Ross Emerson, John “Dutch” Leonard, William McGarry, Charles Purdue, Jerry Smoyer, Natalie (Sutyak) Watkins and Patti Zbell-Henry.
Bossone bowling event upcoming
YOUNGSTOWN — The John Bossone Senior Masters Tournament is scheduled Feb. 7-8 and Feb. 14-15.
The fee is $70 per person for the event, which will be held at Mahoning Valley Lanes, McKinley Lanes, Wedgewood Lanes and Holiday Bowl.

LORDSTOWN — Tickets for the Bristol-Lordstown boy’s basketball game are on sale at the Lordstown High main office daily from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The teams meet Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Chevrolet Centre.

NEW YORK — What a Pear remained undefeated in three starts, beating Sapphire Sky by 11‚Ñ2 lengths Sunday in the $66,500 Wistful Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.
Channing Hill was aboard for trainer Joseph Parker as What a Pear ran the 1 mile, 70 yards in 1:44.38 on the fast track.
What a Pear paid $7.10, $4 and $3.60. Sapphire Sky returned $6.30 and $4.80.

Tour of Qatar
DOHA, Qatar — Bradley Wiggins of Britain took the yellow jersey and his team, Garmin Slipstream, won the time trial Sunday on the opening day of the Tour of Qatar.
Wiggins finished the 3.7-mile race in 6 minutes, 34 seconds.
Seventeen teams are taking part in the six-day race that ends on Friday. Today’s second stage will cover 83 miles.
