Michael Zordich \ Former Cardinal
Education: Chaney High, Penn State University.
Family: Wife Cindy; children Michael, Alex and Aiden.
NFL career: New York Jets, 1987-88; Phoenix Cardinals, 1989-93; Philadelphia Eagles, 1994-98.
Today: President, Wright Industries of Pittsburgh.
Arizona memories: Said the Cardinals seemed to be improving in the early 1990s. “Joe Bugel was [head] coach. It took him two-three years to get comfortable. He finally started to get the people together, finally started jelling as a team. We went 7-9, we lost a couple of games we shouldn’t have. And when everyone was starting to feel good, they pulled the rug out ... and the team disperses. A lot of good folks left.”
West Coast living: “Living on the West Coast, you watch Pac-10 all day and back then the Pac-10 wasn’t what it is today. It would drive me nuts — I wanted to see the Nittany Lions play, West Virginia, Syracuse, a lot of the teams we played against. It was a funny experience.”
East Coast living: “It was a lot of fun for me to play back east because I went to Penn State. Being in Philadelphia was like being at home.”
Olsavsky envy: Zordich told Olsavsky: “That had to be a helluva nine years, to be in the same city where you went to school. For me, that’s what it was like to be in Philadelphia.”
Predictions: Went 0-for-2 in his Championship Game predictions. “I picked the Ravens only because it’s hard to beat an NFL team three times in a year. They played them tough both times. The second game was a fluke. To this day, I don’t think it was a touchdown when [Santonio Holmes] caught the ball in the end zone even though the ball wasn’t in the end zone. I thought the Eagles would win, but they kept the defense quiet, they kept [safety] Brian Dawkins quiet and [quarterback] Kurt Warner had a great game. When they had to score, they scored.”
Memorable coaches: Three: Bud Carson, Emmitt Thomas and Jim Johnson (current Eagles defensive coordinator who is being treated for cancer). “Bud Carson coached me in New York and Philadelphia. He made a tremendous impact on my life and I love the guy. Just the way he treated everybody on the field as the same, I truly respected that. Emmitt Thomas, who was just inducted into the [Pro Football] Hall of fame, was defensive coordinator in Philly. He taught that everybody had to know what everybody [else] was doing. Jim Johnson coached me in Arizona and was a super coach but a really, really good person. I had a horrible year in 1992 I and to come back and lift myself up. He was right there with me.”
