Terlesky wins 21st tournament

BOARDMAN — Ten-year-old Brian Terlesky Jr. ended his 2009 junior golf tournament schedule just the way he began it — with another victory.

Terlesky, a fourth grader at Stadium Drive Elementary School walked away with the top spot in the 10-year-old division of the Prestigious Golf Championship held recently at PGA National Resort and Spa in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Terlesky, who captured his 21st tournament championship of the year, defeated a field of 15 juniors in the 10-year-old division and he was the only notherner in the group. In the three-day tournament he shot rounds of 82, 73 and 72 for a 227 total and a four shot victory over his closest opponent.

The son of Brian and Christine Terlesky, Brian has also just been invited to compete in another World Youth Team Challenge to be held in June at the Bolingbrook (Ill.) Golf Club.

Leach files restraining order

LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is seeking a temporary restraining order that would allow him to coach in the Alamo Bowl on Jan. 2.

The motion was filed Tuesday in Lubbock, Texas. An in-chambers hearing was set for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 99th District Court.

University officials suspended Leach on Monday while the school investigates a complaint from receiver Adam James and his family.

Third spot for Richardson

KEARNS, Utah — Heather Richardson clinched a spot in her third distance for the Olympics by winning the 1,500 meters Tuesday at the U.S. Speedskating Championships, beating her personal best by more than two seconds.

Richardson added the 1,500 to the spots she had already clinched in the 500 and 1,000 for the Vancouver Games, which will be the first Olympics for the 20-year-old from High Point, N.C.

Richardson’s time of 1:56.22 at the Utah Olympic Oval on Tuesday was 2.07 faster than she had ever gone in the distance.

Brian Hansen clinched his first Olympic berth with a third-place finish in the men’s 1,500. Chad Hedrick won the race and Trevor Marsicano was second, but both had already locked up Olympic berths in the 1,500.

Mets, Bay reach deal

NEW YORK — The New York Mets and free agent slugger Jason Bay have reached a deal.

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that the sides have a preliminary agreement. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Bay must pass a physical for the contract to be complete.

The three-time All-Star is expected to sign a four-year contract. The 31-year-old outfielder hit 36 home runs with 119 RBIs last season for Boston.

Castroneves becomes dad

ATLANTA — Three-time Indy 500 winner and former Dancing with the Stars champion Helio Castroneves has a new title: Dad.

Castroneves’ girlfriend, Adriana Henao, gave birth to the couple’s first child, Mikaella Castroneves, on Monday afternoon in Atlanta. The baby girl measured in at 19 inches and seven pounds, three ounces.

In a statement released by Penske Racing, Castroneves says his girlfriend and child were doing well and the baby already has him running around “like crazy.”

Belmont Stakes needs more help

ALBANY, N.Y. — The New York state comptroller subpoenaed financial records Monday from the New York Racing Association and is challenging the group’s claim that it may need another bailout to save the Belmont Stakes.

The association got $105 million from the state and forgiveness of millions more in state debt in 2008. It is refusing to open its books to Thomas DiNapoli’s auditors, saying a recent court ruling limits the comptroller’s authority to examine its finances.

Garcia having hand problems

MADRID — Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia will visit a specialist about a hand injury that has prevented him from swinging a club for several weeks.

Garcia said Tuesday that he still feels pain in his right hand after not playing for nearly a month. He sprained the wrist during the third round of last month’s Dubai World Championship, where Garcia finished seventh..
