Local observances

Harambee of Youngstown Inc., 3618 Kiowa Drive, plans these public observances of Kwanzaa:

kUmoja (unity): 7 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., where the Rev. Kenneth L. Simon is pastor. There will be music, dancing and cultural expression featuring the Harambee Youth Organization. There will be vendors. It is sponsored by the Harambee Coalition.

kKujichagulia (self-determination): 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 505 Parkcliff Ave., where the Rev. Lewis W. Macklin II is pastor. It will feature ministerial interpretations of the Nguzo Saba (the Seven Principles). There will be music and choirs. It is sponsored by the church.

kUjima (collective work and responsibility): 6 p.m. Dec. 28 at Beulah Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave., where the Rev. Harold Logan is pastor. There will be a Gospel celebration, liturgical dancing, pantomime and cultural celebration. Members of the Black Knights Police Association will speak. Refreshments will be served.

kUjamaa (cooperative economics): 6:30 to 9 p.m. Dec. 29 at 542 Belmont Ave. There will be vendors, prizes and refreshments. It is sponsored by Muhammed Study Group 9.

kNia (purpose): 6 p.m. Dec. 30 at Mount Sinai Baptist Church, 328 S. Forest St. with Gospel and cultural celebrations. Refreshments will be served.

kImani (faith): 5:30 p.m. Jan. 1 at the McGuffey Centre, 1649 Jacobs Road. There will be vendors, music, dancing and poetry by the Harambee Youth Organization. There will be a karamu (community feast), so bring a covered dish for the community table. It will be sponsored by the Harambee Coalition and Associated Neighborhood Centers.
