YOUNGSTOWN — Northside Weed and Seed is “taking it to the streets” through old-fashioned Christmas caroling Thursday. Weed and Seed members and residents and youths from the North Side will participate. It is the third annual event.
Carolers will meet at 5:45 p.m. at Heart Reach Ministries, 211 Redondo Drive, with caroling at 6. Other stops will be Park Vista Retirement Community on Fifth Avenue at 6:30; St. Elizabeth Health Center, 1044 Belmont Ave., at 7; Arlington Gardens, 767 Park Ave., at 7:30; and Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, 962 Martin Luther King Blvd., at 8.
Youngstown police will lead carolers through the streets. A&M Transit of Alliance is providing a bus to transport carolers. For information, contact Terri Bryant, Weed and Seed coordinator, (330) 744-9011.
Handel’s cash missing
AUSTINTOWN — The owner of Handel’s Ice Cream in the township discovered $15,000 in deposits missing.
The woman told police Monday she was reviewing the monthly business account when she discovered several missing deposits that were never taken to the bank.
She said after taking a closer look, she found that $15,000 was missing from the Mahoning Avenue business from February through November 2009. It appeared that one deposit per month wasn’t taken to the bank, according to the police report. She said she has every deposit slip written out by managers but told police she didn’t want to identify a suspect at this time.
Store robbed
AUSTINTOWN — Police are looking for the man who held up a convenience store at knife point.
A female employee told police that about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, a man, wearing dark clothes and a dark scarf covering his face, entered the UniMart on Mahoning Avenue and demanded the money from the register.
She said he brandished a large knife and told her to remove the cash drawer. The woman told police she slid the drawer across the counter to the man, who removed about $90 in paper currency before fleeing by foot northbound on Mahoning Avenue.
Animal benefit
SALEM – The Salem Fun Factory, 520 E. Pershing St., will host the Humane Society Skate from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Fun Factory offers roller- skating, video games, black-light Putt Putt Golf, bounce house, a full concession and Wi-Fi.
Admission is $2 per activity, or attendees can bring new pet items, cat litter, office supplies, latex gloves, bleach, paper towels, laundry detergent or gift cards to receive play or skate admission for free. Skate rental is not included.
All items will be donated to the Humane Society of Columbiana County, 1825 S. Lincoln Ave., Salem. It operates solely by private donation. Representatives will be present with photos and information about adoptable pets.

MINERAL RIDGE — There is a regular meeting of the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District board of directors at 4 p.m. today in the assembly room at the district offices, 1181 Ohltown McDonald Road.
