2 weekend carjackings reported in Hubbard

HUBBARD — Police reported two recent carjacking incidents. The first happened about 5 p.m. Friday in the 300 block of Westview Avenue. Three carjackers were involved, and one hit the car owner with his hand. They took his black Ford Explorer and fled toward Jacobs Road; Youngstown police were alerted.

Another incident occurred about 12:23 a.m. Sunday, also in the 300 block of Westview when the suspect showed a gun to the car owner. That vehicle, a silver Buick, also is missing. Police pursued the suspect to the Rockwood Village area in Youngstown, where they lost the car in the darkness.

Salem office renovations

COLUMBUS — The state controlling board has released $173,600 to renovate office space in Salem for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The funds will be used to update the Division of Mineral Resources Management district office with new walls, flooring, countertops and fixtures. The project, to be completed by August, also will include the expansion of a parking lot and new walkways and doors.

Jim Santini Builder Inc. of Washingtonville and Ellyson Plumbing and Heating of Salem will handle the work, according to documents.

In other business, the controlling board approved a contract with Hartman Engineering in Delaware to design and oversee construction of watercraft access facilities at five state parks, including Guilford Lake State Park in Columbiana County. The project will include the installation of security lighting in the boat ramp/marina area.

Salvation Army benefit

LORDSTOWN — The Lordstown General Motors Complex Paint Shop will have its seventh annual benefit for the Salvation Army beginning at 11:15 a.m. today at the paint-shop cafeteria.

Boardman board approves tutoring for seniors

BOARDMAN — During its meeting Monday, the board of education approved a motion recommending a maximum of 60 hours of tutoring for seniors who have not passed at least one section of the Ohio Graduation Test.

Such intervention is to take place before the OGT is given in March, Superintendent Frank Lazzeri noted.

Lazzeri also approved four field trips for high school students that will take place over the next few months.

The Boardman High School band ensemble is to perform Jan. 29-30 at a conference in Cincinnati.

The other three will see qualifying members of the Boardman indoor track team participating in the Indoor Track and Field championships March 11-15 in Boston; high school Drama Guild members will attend the State Thespian Conference between March 19-21 at Ashland University in Mansfield; and the girls track team will take part in the Hilliard Davidson Wildcat Relays, set for April 2-3 in Hilliard, Ohio.
