nhl roundup \ Saturday’s other games
Ducks 3, Blue Jackets 1
COLUMBUS — Dan Sexton, Bobby Ryan and Corey Perry scored goals and Jonas Hiller stopped 35 shots to power Anaheim. It was Hiller’s first win since Nov. 19 and ended a personal three-game losing skid. The game was surprisingly dominated by defense, despite featuring two teams who have given up the most goals in the Western Conference. R.J. Umberger had the lone goal for the Blue Jackets, who had won both earlier meetings with Anaheim this season but have lost 10 of their last 12 games overall. The Ducks weathered almost a minute with a two-man disadvantage while holding a one-goal lead early in the third period. Ryan had an assist to go with his goal, and Ryan Whitney added two assists.
Islanders 3, Bruins 2, OT
UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Frans Nielsen scored 24 seconds into overtime to snap the Islanders’ losing streak at three games. Matt Moulson had a goal and an assist for the Islanders (12-13-7), Rob Schremp scored his first NHL goal, and Kyle Okposo had two assists. The Bruins (16-9-6) had won two straight and had been 8-1-1 in their previous 10. Bergfors, Elias lead Devils to 4-1 win
Devils 4, Flyers 1
NEWARK, N.J. — Patrik Elias and Niclas Bergfors each scored two goals and Martin Brodeur made 22 saves to lead the Devils. Brian Rolston and Travis Zajac each added two assists for the Devils, winners of eight of their last 10 games. Claude Giroux scored for the Flyers, who have only two wins in their last 12 games.
Maple Leafs 6, Capitals 3
TORONTO — Matt Stajan had two goals and an assist to lead Toronto, giving the Maple Leafs three straight wins at home for the first time since January 2008. Phil Kessel, Niklas Hagman, Lee Stempniak and Alexei Ponikarovsky also scored for Toronto, 7-3-0 in its last 10 games and 11-14-7 overall. Kessel also had two assists. Nicklas Backstrom scored twice, and Alex Ovechkin added a goal for Washington (20-7-6), which lost for the second time this season in Toronto.
Thrashers 4, Canadiens 3, OT
ATLANTA — Ilya Kovalchuk and the Atlanta Thrashers needed overtime to finally solve Montreal’s penalty kill, as Kovalchuk’s goal from the left circle in the extra period beat the Canadiens. The Canadiens killed Atlanta’s first six power-play opportunities and had not allowed a goal in 33 straight short-handed situations over seven games before Kovalchuk’s goal with only 3 seconds remaining in the overtime power play that carried over from the end of the third period.
Senators 4, Hurricanes 2
OTTAWA — Alex Kovalev scored three times, including the 400th of his career, to help the Senators beat the Hurricanes. With the score tied 2-2 late in the third, Kovalev took a shot on an Ottawa power play that deflected off the skate of Hurricanes defenceman Jay Harrison and past Manny Legace. Kovalev added an empty-net goal in the final minute. Jason Spezza also scored for the Senators, and Brian Elliott made 23 saves. Ray Whitney scored twice for the Hurricanes.
Sabres 3, Rangers 2
NEW YORK — Tough guy Patrick Kaleta scored twice, including the tiebreaking goal in the second period, and the Sabres shook off an uncharacteristic rough beginning by Ryan Miller. Kaleta, known more for his fists than offensive touch, scored from in-close in the first and then converted a short-handed breakaway in the second to give the Sabres a 3-2 lead. He entered with 10 goals in 124 NHL games, but pushed his season total to a career-best five with his first two-goal game. Kaleta nudged a bouncing puck past Ales Kotalik at the right point and came in alone on Henrik Lundqvist, beating him gloveside at 9:30 before the goalie could react.
