Mount Union wins, advances to title game


ALLIANCE (AP) — Cecil Shorts caught a touchdown pass and ran for two TDs, leading Mount Union to a 24-7 win over Wesley in the Division III semifinals Saturday.

Mount Union (14-0) advances to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl next Saturday for the 13th time. The game will be played in Salem, Va. The Purple Raiders will be shooting for their 11th title.

The Purple Raiders extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 29 games. Mount Union is 258-11-1 since 1990, including the two longest win streaks in college football history of 55 and 54 games.

Wesley (13-1) was making its fifth straight appearance in the Division III tournament and its third trip to the semifinals.
