POLAND

Sandy Baran of Lowellville drives along State Route 224 through the center of Poland every day. When she saw the sign for The Picket Fence Country Store, she quickly called her friend Debbie Rozzi.

“I told her ‘They’re putting a country store in Poland. We have to go when it opens,’” Baran said.

The two women were among the first customers at The Picket Fence, 9 E. McKinley Way, on Dec. 3, just before the store’s open house on Dec. 4 and 5.

Owner Terri Gomoll said she saw the available building, site of a former florist shop, and couldn’t pass it up.

“I drove past here and saw this little spot. I just knew the location would be perfect,” Gomoll said. “The store gives off an ambiance that goes with Poland.”

The Picket Fence carries goods like homemade crafts, baskets, candles, primitives, antique furniture and a modest selection of baked goods.

“Most of the people who have come in so far tell me that they really needed a country store around here with primitives and things like that,” Gomoll said.

The Poland store is Gomoll’s second location. The first, also called The Picket Fence, is located in East Liverpool where Gomoll resides.

“When I first moved to East Liverpool, my parents had a big historical house and my mother furnished it with antiques,” she said. “When I got out of high school, I started buying antiques. I really love them.”

Gomoll said that she is always open to consignments, homemade crafts and antiques from area residents to sell in the store.

The Picket Fence is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and until Dec. 25, it will also be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday.

Baran, who purchased a pillow shaped like a Christmas stocking, and Rozzi, who is from Austintown, said the store exceeded their expectations.

“These types of stores are hard to find without leaving the area, and it’s a gorgeous store,” Rozzi said. “I made a special trip today, and it was worth my while.”
